Chicks in Twig Basket Easter Oil Painting Chickens Art Farm Animals
Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".
Baby chicks seem to glow in the sun if the lighting is just right and in this scene I wanted these three to come to life in the twiggy basket. I think children who grow up in the country are so lucky! Actually you don't have to be a kid to love this kind of spring fun. I didn't grow up with these critters but I can paint them and enjoy them!

Snowy Ridge Oil Painting Winter Landscape Rural Arkansas Lincoln Lake Park
While trailing along with our local hiking club I saw some great scenery at Lincoln Lake Park in Northwest Arkansas. Our snowfall in Ft. Smith (farther south) had already melted so it was great fun to hike in the warmer temps and still see snow covering much of the landscape. The movement of lights and darks in the snow and green moss covering the the rocky slopes was interesting and I thought that this painting told the best story of the sights. There was no path to follow to the top in case you were interested.

Spring Hares Oil Painting Rabbit Art Pet Animal Portrait Spring Wildlife
I painted these spotted rabbits bunched together with some spring colors and blooming flowers happening in the background. Sometimes the looser approach is best when I have an idea about a piece, and I went with that thought with this painting. The expressions of the rabbits are what drew me in to begin with and that's what I wanted to portray.

Mourning Dove Preening Oil Painting Bird Portrait Dove Wildlife
This is a second painting of the same dove I painted before. The bird is in a different position on the deck rail and seems to be interrupted in her grooming process and pauses to look. I used the same colors but different parts of the dove are highlighted and the sunlight catches the ruffled feathers. Mourning doves are a joy to watch and I always try to avoid frightening them when they are feeding right outside my door. I wish they wouldn't fly away so quickly at the slightest sound.

Wary Fox Oil Painting Red Fox Art Wildlife Animals Winter
A fox in the snow is a great combination for me to paint I've found. I love the intensity of a fox's gaze. And his coloring against a cold and stark background adds to the pleasure of the scene I think. I used lots of thick paint in areas and thoroughly enjoyed the process. Painting is great fun when it is just that!

Doe Portrait Oil Painting Deer Art Wildlife Animals
One good thing about living where we do (Arkansas river valley) is that deer romp through our rural area right out in the open and don't seem to think much about it. Our neighbors would agree! The down side is, of course, that they eat tender garden offerings and rub the bark off of young trees. I don't get up early enough (why not?!) to see them in the semi-darkness, but I wanted to paint this doe against a dark background to show off her great features. So many different tones of red/brown/gray/white and more are apparent in her coloring. Painting wildlife is comforting to the soul and a lesson I've known for quite some time I believe.

Winter Female Cardinal Oil Painting Bird Portrait Wildlife Audubon
A female cardinal was posing on a shepherd's hook while waiting her turn at the feeder and looking sweetly "puffed up". Male cardinals are spectacularly flashy and I love them, but I also think the females are gorgeous in their own way. This one received her due attention I think. I'm glad to be distracted by birds in winter!

Cat Tracks Watercolor Painting Pet Portrait Tabby Feline Art Snow
A bulky Tabby cat with lovely markings was making her way across my front yard after our last 6 inches of snow had fallen. I captured her with my camera and then again in watercolor. I used watercolor canvas and the painting is sealed with acrylic spray and will not be required to be framed under glass. The long shadow she made in the afternoon on the brilliant snow was why I grabbed my camera, and the clear footprints were what I noticed later that made me decide to paint her.

Blushing Green Apple Oil Painting Still Life Apples Fruit Art
This time I painted a single green apple on a square canvas which felt like a good fit to me. The interesting parts were defining the roundness of the apple and working with the complimentary colors of the apple and background. Edges were important too. I'm becoming more aware of working with edges that are lost to the background and others that are clearly defined.

Simple Fruit Watercolor Painting Still Life Pear Grape Fruit Art
The snow outside makes my studio much brighter and I like to make watercolor studies of fruit on these cold winter days, especially when the sun makes an appearance. The long cast shadows of the grape and pear are equally important elements of the painting. Reflected colors mixed in also add to the painting adventure. It's always nice to have watercolors to go back to after I've had several oil-painitng challenges and headaches!

Another green apple painting. I did one last year that I was happy with using just one apple. I went back to my original idea and used three this time. I love the colors and their contrasts with each other. Also, I'm always amazed at how just the shapes of the apples (or other fruit) and their stems can make an interesting painting.

Single Gerbera Oil Painting Daisy Flower Still Life Art
Oil on canvas, 6" x 8"
This was a painting from a while ago. I'm presently working on several paintings and one is of spring Daffodils. In this painting I wanted to work with intense color and value contrasts, and painting a graceful Gerbera Daisy bloom was a natural choice for this purpose. The painting is very simple yet contains all of the information that interested me. I'm again reminding myself to strive for simplicity of shapes and the unity of the painting.

Resting in South Pasture Oil Painting Farm Animal Portrait Horse Art Equine Landscape
Being tired of the snow and winter scenery lately, I daydreamed about a warm, summer landscape. A horse enjoying the landscape is even better I thought, so I put them together. I have been listening to other watercolor artists discuss painting on different surfaces and I decided to try painting on gessoed Bristol board. It leaves the paint more "on top" of the surface and is easier to remove and change things this way. It gives it a more distinctive look also, I think, because puddles of paint are layered on top of or next to other puddles. It is closer to painting on hot-pressed watercolor paper in the way the paint reacts to the surface. I feel like trying different ways to paint frequently and sometimes I give in to the feeling!

Tabby Kitten Oil Painting Pet Portrait Cat Feline Art
Cat (kitty) faces are truly as fascinating to paint as they are to observe in real life. I love combining all the varied colors for the fur of a Tabby to make a painting. But sometimes it is frustrating to paint their markings which seem to get "complicated" in my head and I tend to get lost. This time, however, the painting seemed to flow much more easily. Great fun!

I enjoyed painting this image of a doe again for a collector and I believe it has more color and vibrancy this time, so that is always a pleasant result for me. Young Fisherman Oil Painting Portrait Boy Cane Pole Fishing
I was interested in the light and shade pattern on the boy and ground as he stood in the dappled light with his fishing pole in the water. It was a wonderful summer scene and I wanted to capture its simplicity and peacefulness. His cuffed overalls were also great to paint! I had kept the painting looser for a while and then I got into the details too much I think. Oh well, that's how it goes sometimes. Summer seems far away now, especially with snow falling today.

Montezuma's Castle Oil Painting Landscape Desert Western Sedona Arizona Ancient Ruins
The colors and shadows of these ancient dwellings were fascinating to paint. My daughter recently visited Arizona with a friend from Phoenix. I asked her to take lots of pictures and she did! I chose this subject first because of the colors and also the feeling of forms within forms going back into space. Montezuma's Castle is a National Monument near Flagstaff and is actually misnamed by early settlers because Montezuma was never there. It is one of the best preserved cliff dwellings in North America.

Oil on stretched canvas, 7" x 5" x 3/4".
Lovely and cheerful violas come back every spring in a pot on my front porch and they glow in the sunlight. I painted this single bloom larger than it's real size because the blooms are very small. It's not actually a Thanksgiving theme because spring Magnolia blooms are in the painting, but I wanted to repost the painting because it included a piece of my mother's china which was always used at Thanksgiving and Christmas too. Resting at Stone Bridge Oil Painting Figurative Landscape Palette Knife Art Autumn Trees Forest
While hiking at Mt. Nebo state park in Arkansas recently, I captured a really nice composition of another hiker on a stone bridge with my camera. The lighting was fantastic. The basic forms were easy to read and I loved that. I kept it loose and used a palette knife for most of the painting, and I decided that the figure should be integrated into the woodland setting which would be best for the painting overall. And by the way, just for the record, the resting hiker was my husband.

Now that I've painted a red fox for a commissioned painting, I'm really intrigued by their great coloring and penetrating eyes. I'd love to paint another one! Crazy Little Hot Peppers Oil Painting Still Life Art Ornamental Vegetables Garden
Peppers make great painting subjects, and these wildly bright ornamental ones bring October colors into the mix also. I'd been admiring my neighbor's flowering peppers in a pot for a long time and finally took some photos of them. I liked the way I could play with the composition. The leaves were sunlit and the peppers protruded out in so many ways. Photographing them was exciting and painting them was even more so. I've been working with bolder and more vibrant colors lately in my smaller studies that don't usually get posted. (laziness on my part). I intended to play with the sunlight streaming across this tabby Maine Coon kitten lying on the floor with a basket. I've stayed with a very limited palette for this small painting of bright orange/red poppies lit by gloriously strong sunlight. Phthalo blue is a color I haven't used much before and it's the blue primary for my color mixing. It's a learning experience that I am open to and enjoying. Just Peeled Oil Painting Fruit Still Life Art Orange Citrus
Near complimentary color notes of oranges and blue-violets make this painting of orange slices hum and vibrate. This keeps me interested the entire painting. I guess it's because my eyes and/or my brain stay alert and interested to see how the finished image will turn out! I've painted this subject before but in watercolor. The oil colors made the oranges seem transclucent also, so I like this approach just as well. This painting will be shipped with a small display easel. Please see the photo below!

A great way to display petite paintings such as my painting above is in a small display easel. Below is a photo of my painting, "Black-Capped Chick-a-Dee", in a small easel on a table in my entry room. Each petite painting that you collect from me will now come with one of these easels so that you can display this way, or if you prefer, you can frame it and hang it on your wall.

Tiny Crimson Sweet Oil Painting Lilly Still Life Art Watermelon Garden Fruit

Oil on hardboard. 5" x 7".
I always have some of these very small (runt!) watermelons in my garden spots growing among the few normal size melons each summer. This one was especially precious and I painted it on a white tablecloth to celebrate its uniqueness. I ended up celebrating roundness both in the watermelon and in the folds of the cloth and I thought that was pretty cool. It was actually an excuse to paint the green and creamy-white stripes of the melon I'm sure. Oh, by the way, it wasn't edible but I didn't care!
