Still Water and Heron

Oil Bird Art Wildlife Paintings Wetlands Blue Pond

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

We see blue herons near the wetlands where I live in Arkansas and I've tried several times to get photos of one before it leaves the scene and I've had no luck. But a friend captured one beautifully and I painted this heron from her photo. It was such a serene setting with the big bird in the still, shallow water which reflected the lovely blue sky. The bright sunlight made deep, interesting shadows and I knew I wanted to paint it. Thanks, Jeanette!

Blue Jay in Winter

Oil Bird Art Wildlife Paintings Backyard

Oil on canvas board, 9" x 7".

Blue Jays puff themselves out in the winter because of the cold. This guy made a lovely subject to paint and I included some red holly berries for more of a winter atmosphere. When I finished, he seemed to glow among the greenery. I hope everyone has a Merry Christmas! I wish to thank all of my wonderful collectors who have corresponded with me, shared my love of art, and purchased my paintings for themselves or others in the last few years. Daily Painters has been a great experience for me to share my work!

Buster

Oil Pet Art Portraits Welsh Corgi Dog Painting

Oil on stretched canvas, 11" x 14" x 3/4".

Buster, a Welsh Corgi-mix, was a sweet boy and also a very handsome dog to paint. He was found abandoned and taken in by my brother who took care of his epilectic needs and loved him for several years. He passed away this year and is greatly missed. He was a wonderful dog!

Blue Hydrangeas

Oil Still Life Flower Fall Spring Painting Blue Garden

Oil on stretched canvas, 20" x 16".

Large, fluffy hydrangea blooms in a vase were drenched with sunlight from a window above. These were some of my hydrangeas at their best color when I photographed them a few years ago. I enjoyed painting the blooms, but I loved painting the shadows on the table and vase!

Oil Still Life Flower Jacobs Coat Rose Summer Fall

Oil on masonite board, 10" x 8".

Roses are wonderful to paint and this painting is one of my favorite climbing roses. A Jacob's Coat rose has a luscious combination of deep yellow, orange, and red tones. It is eye candy for someone like me who loves these color changes! I hope that others enjoy it too. Then the circle of painting fine art is complete.

Bearded Pink Iris

Oil Still Life Flower Fall Spring Bulbs Painting Green

Oil on stretched canvas, 16" x 8" x 3/4".

I thought that some of the Irises that I photographed seemed like pink gems so that is how I painted them. They have lush tones with dramatically flowing petals. They are contrasted nicely by the thick greenery of the leaves and stalks. The barely opened buds are held high on strong stems with these Bearded Irises.

Silhouette

Oil Pet Art Portraits Cat Window Red Shadows Fluffy

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10" x 3/4".

This is an earlier animal portrait of mine. I painted this multi-colored fluffy cat on a windowsill with his shadow falling on a table covered with a red cloth. I loved the composition and controlling the values for this one. This pose is very "cat-like" and he has the comfortable attitude of a cat allowing humans to also live in his home.

Unfolding Magnolia Bloom

Oil Still Life Flower Southern Magnolia Tree

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10" x 3/4".

This is the second painting of this southern magnolia bloom with leaves that was done from an indoor photoshoot of a lovely bloom from one of my trees earlier this year. The creamy-white petals are painted in the interesting shapes they make as they unfold. They also bounce around the reflected cast shadow colors of the glossy green leaves. I think they make very interesting subjects for botanical still lifes!

Red Currants

Watercolor Still Life Flower Fruit Berries Cherry Grapes

Watercolor on Arches, 12" x 9".

Clusters of cherry red currants growing on the vine painted in transparent watercolors is my painting for today. I've been going back and forth between watercolors and oils and I don't know what that means except that it's been interesting. I love the qualities of both I guess. "Hidden passages" can be made in watercolors and that's a fun and mysterious thing.

This was a reposting of a painting from last winter. I've been busy with new florals coming soon and also some commissions. If you'd like a commissioned painting contact me. Thanks for visiting!

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11".

The model in my portrait class recently, Julie, was lovely and had great earrings along with a small braid in her hair. The green sweater was also an asset to the painting. It's always a learning experience when working quickly from a live model and translating the information to canvas.

Mister Pig

Oil Pet Art Portraits Pink Farm Animal Porky

Oil on stretched canvas, 9" x 7".

What did I do after Thanksgiving? I painted a pig. It's kind of a cute pig if you appreciate their looks in general. If not, you won't think he's cute at all. The most challenging part was painting his nose and ears and making them have that pink, rubbery appearance. Now, it's back to painting flowers again.

Red Hibiscus

Oil Tropical Hibiscus Flower Garden Landscape

Oil on stretched canvas, 20" x 16" x 3/4".

I reworked my hibiscus painting when I realized I liked it much better in this vertical format. Tropical and enticing hibiscus blooms, buds and foliage in a large painting and ready to hang. I painted these red/orange blooms with an eye for the shadows on their petals made by the large stamens. Happy Thanksgiving!

Greener Pastures

Oil Holstein Dairy Cow Pet Art Portraits Farm Animals

Oil on stretched canvas, 12" x 16" x 3/4".

This painting of a black and white cow resting her head on a rock wall fence is an older painting of mine that I hadn't yet posted to my blog. I remember thinking that even cows long for greener or better pastures when their own are just as green. Or maybe they just want to explore the unknown and this I can also understand.
The painted staple-free sides of the canvas make framing optional as it can be hung as is if desired.

Wildfowers in Blue Vase

Oil Still Life Daisy Flower Garden Yellow Impressionist

Oil on cradle board, 12" x 9" x 1".

The sunlight flooding down from above on these wildflowers made an exciting pattern on the blue vase and the white surface of the table. I was interested in the vibration between the light and shadow shapes and the colors of the back-lit petals produced from the strong light source in this painting. The 1 inch sides of the cradle board are painted so framing is optional.

Hang Over

Oil Dog Pet Art Portraits Jack Russell Terrier

Oil on stretched canvas, 12" x 9" x 3/4".

My painting of this playful young Jack Russell Terrier on her back and head hanging from a chair was included in the juried competition, Art Show at the Dog Show, in Wichita, KS earlier this year. JRTs are so expressive at any given time and I liked the challenge of painting this little dog in what is maybe one of the terriers' favorite positions.

Oil Lop Eared Rabbit Pet Art Farm Animals Wildlife

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11" x 3/4".

This was a commissioned portrait of a Lop Eared rabbit named Chewy, and I painted him busy doing one of his favorite things on a colorful gift. He is described as a wonderful family pet. I surely would enjoy petting his ears and holding him. I don't know what my dogs and cat would think about it if I had one of these cute rabbits though.

Nasturtium Jewels

Oil Fall Still Life Garden Flowers Mixed Colors

Oil on canvas board, 8" x 10" x 3/4".

These nasturtiums were welcoming our cooler weather and showing their bright, mulit-colored blooms and vining out on my patio. The plants seem to just barely hang on during the long, hot months and then come to life again as most other flowers are dying back. I placed them in small tea strainer to paint them. I think their round-ish shaped leaves are also very attractive. I intended to keep this still life looser than usual as I am experimenting with different approaches to subjects. This painting has staple-free sides that are painted if you'd like to hang it unframed.

Country Blue Rooster

Oil Rooster Pet Art Portraits Chicken Farm Animals

Oil on stretched canvas, 12" x 9" x 3/4".

I think the color combinations in this painting of a blue/black/white rooster work well. The green and yellow colors of the background compliment the red wattle and comb of the rooster and I liked the effect of bringing the white top feathers down and over the compact dark blue body feathers. The painted staple-free sides of the canvas make framing optional as it can be hung as is if desired.

Mum Display

Oil Chrysanthemum Fall Still Life Garden Flowers Landscape

Oil on canvas board, 8" x 10".

I've been motivated by the gorgeous fall colors which always include the profuse mums that we see in our area. I did a 8 x 10 as a small study for a larger painting to come. This landscaped garden displayed a curving row of mums spilling over a low rock wall with some potted flowers adding to the colors. I kept a looser feel to the brushwork and concentrated on masses of form and values. I was happy with it and am inspired to do more!

Shimmer

Oil Horse Pet Art Portraits Arabian

Oil on stretched canvas, 11" x 14" x 3/4".

Grey horses are fascinating for me to paint. I entitled this painting "Shimmer" simply because as I was in the process of painting the subtle changes in the skin tones of the horse I observed that this seemed to make its form shimmer with light. The painting is on gallery-wrapped canvas with the sides painted.

Reflections of Springtime

Oil Daffodils Spring Still Life Garden Flowers Botanical

Oil on cradleboard, 8" x 8" x 3/4".

This early spring painting of daffodils in a clear globe vase was a study in reflections. The reflections of light appear in the water and petals in the vase and the same light is reflected onto the top of the wood surface of a piece of furniture. The petals of the daffodils are semi-transparent and make interesting shapes to paint. Their faces are also fun with the yellow/orange ruffles and dark centers.

Her Pony

Oil Pet Art Portraits Shetland Horse Farm Animals

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

A Shetland pony was giving rides to children and I took photos of her while she was resting from her work. Oil on canvas board, 10" x 8".

This small landscape is a painting of a rocky overlook in the Ozark mountains near where I live in Arkansas. The number of jogging paths in the wilderness here are endless and I hope I can enjoy most of them eventually. There were just a few trees turning colorful in the trees below
the overlook. The fall air is crisp and I love it on a sunny day!

Hydrangeas in Glass

Oil Flowers Glass Vase Still Life Botanical Garden

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11" x 3/4".

I cut some fluffy, bushy blooms from my hydrangeas and painted them in a vase with bright light from a window. The blooms start as green and turn a creamy yellow with blue edging, and they end as a lovely blue and white color. I wish I could have these flowers growing all around my house but they only thrive on the north side where they are shaded most of the time. Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10" x 3/4"

I painted these orange Marigolds with yellow centers before the much cooler nights shrunk their bushy heads of gold. Now they are about to be replaced by Pansies and Snapdragons in my flowerbeds. I lit a snippet of them from above in a little bud vase to paint them and now they'll be bright and cheerful forever. Ahhh, the pure magic of painting! Sphinx

Oil Painting Tuxedo Cat Pet Art Portraits

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

This painting of my cat, Chloe, is at least a little bit spooky. I say that because I've always thought that her mask-like markings are kinda creepy with that perpetual, forced smiled on her face. In fact, I realize I don't appreciate masks in general and this began at a very early age (clowns?) As it pertains to Chloe - her smiling expression is misleading; she's not a love-bug most of the time.

School Girl Portrait Oil Painting Figure Young Classic

"School Girl"

Oil on canvas, 12" x 9".

For me this was a successful piece in that it was finally one other portrait that I was pleased enough with to post on my blog. I painted it from an old photo that I had taken of my daughter who was in 5th or 6th grade and wearing one of the sweet outfits that my mother had sewn for her. I remember having her pose many times for me in those days when I was in art school studying painting and photography. I'm now going back to some of those "old" photos to use in the portrait painting class that I'm taking from Patricia Lappin. She has encouraged me to paint more boldly and confidently and she's a wonderful portrait artist from which to study. Art is truly a journey just like life. I don't think I really understood it while it was happening . . . . . .

Cherry Tumble Oil Painting Still Life Art Fruit Natural Food Ranier Kitchen Garden

"Cherry Tumble"

Oil on back-stapled canvas, 10" x 8".

Ranier cherries are described as large, sweet, yellow cherries with a bright red blush. I chose to paint the type of cherries that I like to look at and also eat regardless of their cost. So I only got a few! My better half would gladly accept the very tart ones. I love the transition of deep yellow to orange to red. It really is the best. Oh yeah, just like the Jacob's Coat roses that I adore painting. Hmmm........

Oil on canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4"

Large sunflower heads have unique characters and they strike lovely poses even when they are past their prime and begin to fade. The stalk of this sunflower was bent and its head appeared too heavy for it. The last of its golden and brown petals hung loosely. Sunflowers are always inspiring if I take the time to look.

An expressive face on a beautiful young filly - so much fun to paint! I've been painting and drawing horses from a very early age and it still fascinates me. In the summer their coats gleam in the sunshine and this defines their structures more clearly. Orchard Peach Halves Study Oil Painting Fruit Still Life

"Orchard Peach Halves Study"

Oil on canvas board, 6" x 8".

I had so many peaches that I just had to paint them! My neighbor and her children pick peaches every summer at a local orchard here in Arkansas and she had a wonderful gift bag for me. I decided I'd like to do a large painting of them after doing some smaller studies. This study is my first, but looking back, I think I may have added too many colors to the shadows. I still love the "peachiness" of their unique shapes and colors.

Bigfoot Cat Oil Painting Pet Art Animals

"Bigfoot"

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

Cats and vague or mysterious backgrounds just seem right together. This guy has some really large white paws and he usually extends them as a half-hearted attempt to ward off his admirers' loving but restricting embraces. All of the proud and independent felines out there understand this very well! The painting is on staple-free canvas and can be hung unframed if desired.

African Violets Oil Painting Botanical Flower Still-Life

"African Violets"

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 6" x 3/4".

My African violets were in full bloom and reaching for the sunlight in this painting. These plants have wavy leaves that glow with warm reddish shades when lit by the sun. Their violet flowers with little yellow centers compliment the leaves well I think. I intended to keep this piece more painterly and concentrated on the shapes and values.
The 3/4" sides are painted a dark brown making framing optional.

Deep Red Beauty Oil Painting Rose Flowers Floral Art

"Deep Red Beauty"

Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 8" x 6" x 3/4".

This is a portrait of a long-stemmed rose that I painted for Valentine's Day. I loved painting the shapes of the deep red petals in the sunlight and the mixtures of soft greens which I devoloped in the background.
The painting is on gallery-wrap canvas and is ready to hang with or without a frame.
