Lemon Eclair Sunflower Oil Painting Flower Still Life Botanical Floral Garden

This variety of sunflower, named "Lemon Eclair", is definitely different from the traditional sunflower that I usually paint and so it was a challenge and some fun at the same time. The profuse yellow petals surrounding the smaller dark center are spikey and fluffy. Lemon sunflowers make their own statement I believe.

This little Luv Bear was a Christmas gift from a few years ago and I was inspired to paint him in one of the many different personalities that I see in him.  Here he has his surprised or startled expression that I find very endearing.  He's kind of a cool guy actually.  The fact that he is extremely squeezable doesn't hurt either!  Along with capturing his expression, I was excited about painting his furry body and red sweater falling into shadow.

I so enjoy painting "wild- looking" felines like Maine Coon cats.  They might be wild in appearance but they are actually very personable and gentle.  We have been feeding and giving shelter to a stray cat who has many of these same features as the one in my painting but without the long hair.  She has shown her thankfulness by bringing us two gophers. She's earning her keep!

Bathed in Sunlight Oil Painting Pet Art Manx Cat

I've photographed this orange Manx cat several times and this pose had her bathed in bright sunlight with most of her face in shadows. This allowed for interesting cooler tones appearing in the white nose and fur. I don't know if I really achieved what I had envisioned capturing in the painting, but there is something there I like and which captures my imagination. A little mystery in a portrait is fun.

Pumpkin Gourd Oil Painting Still Life Art Ornamental Fall Garden Autumn

I usually buy a sack of miniature, mulit-colored gourds for painting inspiration in the fall.  This time I chose a solid orange one to paint.  I guess you'd call it a dimply, pimply, pumpkin gourd.  (I think gourds are in the pumpkin family but they're not good for eating).  This little orange guy had interesting protrusions to play with in paint.  I like to paint subjects in a light that produces a shadow that includes complimentary colors along with the color of the object that I'm painting.

I am very pleased that my Magnolia trees are making it through our very hot and dry summer and producing some beautiful blooms like this one.  I don't know if my favorite parts to paint are the white petals or the twisting waxy leaves.  But I really enjoy the shadows and the rust-colored undersides of the leaves.

Outside Michael's Mansion Oil Painting Plein Air Art Still Life Fort Smith Arkansas

Artists gathered to paint plein air at a beautiful old Mansion here in Fort Smith last month  It has been restored by the new owners and now has an art gallery on the main floor and a bed and breakfast upstairs.  The view I chose to paint included the light and shadow on the steps up the to house.  The sunlit urns with cascading Boston ferns are lovely and elegant.
