Lemon Glow

Oil Painting Still Life Art Fruit

Oil on canvas, 5" x 7".

It's fun to get a "shimmery" effect on objects in the light and a lemon makes a great model.

It felt good to do another yummy dessert painting.  I have never painted cheesecake before and it has really interesting texture and color.  A thick, shiny cherry topping is always a pleasure.  I think it has a certain elegance.

Group of Pears

Oil Fruit Still Life Painting Garden Kitchen Food

Oil on stretched canvas, 11" x 14" x 3/4".

Pears are always interesting to paint because their shapes resemble characteristics of the human form. These multi-colored pears really glowed when their forms were brightly lit in this setting. This painting has staple-free sides that are painted if you'd like to hang it unframed.

Cherries on a Tree

Oil Still Life Painting Fruit Food Tree Leaves

Oil on canvas, 10" x 8"

I have painted rainier cherries in the past, and now I think they are even more fascinating to paint  hanging from the branches of their trees. The long stems glow along with the cherries in their natural surrounding.

Forbidden Fruit

Oil Painting Still Life Art Fruit Garden Snake Adam and Eve

Oil on canvas, 6" x 8"

Ripe, red apples on the tree are very attractive and alluring.  Even small snakes are interested in them!  This was a pleasure to paint.

Purple Plums in White Bowl

Oil Painting Still Life Art Tree Fruit

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10"

These dark plums in a white bowl and warm background presented a great combination to paint. Purple fruit and shades of orange/burnt sienna are simply perfect together.

Lemon Wrap

Oil Painting Still Life Art Citrus Fruit

Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 8" x 8" x 3/4"

This is the second in a series of lemons/fruit wrapped in tissue. In this one, I "spun the color wheel" which I feel added more drama along with more movement of lines and shapes.

Fall Apples

Oil Still Life Painting Garden Fruit Organic Traditional Art

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

I didn't know the name of these little red and yellow-green apples I painted but I was attracted to their wonderful mingling of colors and their stems with drying leaves still attached. It was interesting to paint them in a subdued and traditional manner and their forms disappearing into the background.

Cherries and Light

Oil Still Life Painting Organic Fruit Kitchen Art

Oil on canvas hardboard, 6" x 8"

I used only a few ingredients in making this painting - bright sunlight, a white bowl and a few cherries.  The shapes of the cherries' shadows became another visual ingredient to be enjoyed too.  The dark red cherries glow a brighter red in the light and colors bounce around in the mix with the bowl.  I like to bake tasty things, but painting the ingredients is more fun and rewarding.  And the result lasts longer.

Orange and Peel

Oil Painting Still Life Fruit Art Food Kitchen

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10"

The orange is another favorite subject of mine.  The navel oranges have thick walls that are so fun to paint.  And especially in light and shadow!

Apple Line-up

Oil Painting Still Life Fruit Art Apple Kitchen

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 16"

The apples seem to take on their own unique characters when posed this way and viewed from slightly below.  They can be looked at as actors on a stage or groups involved in conversations if I use my imagination.  I had initially planned to keep the work looser and casual, but paintings sometimes seem to take on their own energy and purpose as many artists have found.  I am satisfied with the apples' finished "characters" in this piece.  That's always a good feeling.

Quiet Melody

Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Pear Grapes Vase

Oil on canvas, 11" x 14".

The somewhat subdued tones of the the flowers and vase paired with the fruit was what kept me interested to keep on painting.  I loved the mood and I hope you do too.  Actually I think I see another pear there. What?

Grapes in Cut Glass

Oil Painting Kitchen Art Still Life Food Fruit

Oil on canvas, 6" x 8`".

This painting was an attempt to catch the glow of a cluster of grapes lit brightly by the sun.  The cut-glass bowl was an added element that really helped the composition I think.  I loved the red and yellow shades of these purple grapes.

Oranges with Pear

Oil Painting Art Fuit Still Life

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

This intimate grouping of fruit and leaves charmed me in painting class last week.  I added some grapes later as counterpoints to the "big" fruits who are in command of the stage.

Sunlit Fruit Still Life

Oil Painting Still Life Fruit Art Vase Kitchen Decor

Oil on canvas, 12" x 10".

I painted this still life from photos I took at a Barry Thomas workshop I attended earlier this year.  We did quick small studies of these brightly lit subjects which were spread out on a large table.  I may paint a larger version of this.  I love the glowing effect and intense color.

Fresh Peaches

Gala Apple

Oil Painting Food Art Still Life Fruit

Oil on Raymar panel, 8" x 10".

I liked this different viewpoint of an apple as a single subject.  The yellow center of the bottom of the fruit was interesting in deep shadow.
