Garlic and Onions

Still Life Painting Vegetables Garden Art Food

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

In this still life, plump green onions are joined with a sweet yellow onion and fresh garlic bulbs.  I liked the play of their colors and highlights.

Radical Radishes

Oil Painting Vegetables Still Life Art Kitchen Garden Food

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

An arrangement of my homegrown radishes was my subject again as I wanted to work with the light and dark patterns on these earthy vegetables.  The playful roots were an added bonus.

Potted Bell Peppers

Oil Painting Vegetables Still Life Art Kitchen Garden

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

I spotted a display of these potted peppers at the Home and Garden Show in Little Rock, AR recently.  I don't remember what the vendor was actually selling, but these three guys really caught my eye.  The individual peat pots have interesting personalities too!

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10"

Here is another arrangement of "Denny's Peppers" that provided me with a lot of inspiration and ideas.  I arranged them in my favorite green, yellow and blue bowl. I like the movement of their energy and their shapes.

Home grown tomatoes from last summer were the subject of this painting. This group of friends were busy modeling in front of my flour and sugar canisters.

Cherry Tomato Basket

Oil Painting Vegetable Still Life Fall Garden

Oil on canvas, 10" x 8".

I gathered some of the last of my neighbors' cherry tomatoes in one of my little baskets.  They just needed the right lighting to show themselves gathered together after they were picked.  The basket's shadow made a lovely pattern on the table.

Turban Squash

Oil Painting Vegetable Still Life Fall Garden

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

Some of my favorite colors of autumn are mixed together in turban squash and its bumpy shapes. The light of the afternoon sun made fun lights and shadows.

Corn Field Road

Oil Painting Landscape Country Sky Clouds

Oil on stretched canvas, 16" x 20".

A country road surrounded by tall cornfields can be very charming and this one even has a residence in view around a bend.  I also like the mountains in the distance and would like to call this "home".

Turnip and Crockery

Oil Painting Art Vegetables Still Life

Oil on canvas, 14" x 11`".

I had an idea to pair some purple-top turnips with a brown crockery piece and I thought they complemented each other in coloring and their earthiness also.  A single carrot is hiding in the shadows.

Pumpkin Gourd

Oil Painting Still Life Art Ornamental Fall Garden Autumn

Oil on canvas, 6" x 8"

I usually buy a sack of miniature, mulit-colored gourds for painting inspiration in the fall.  This time I chose a solid orange one to paint.  I guess you'd call it a dimply, pimply, pumpkin gourd.  (I think gourds are in the pumpkin family but they're not good for eating).  This little orange guy had interesting protrusions to play with in paint.  I like to paint subjects in a light that produces a shadow that includes complimentary colors along with the color of the object that I'm painting.

Nesting Yellow Pepper

Oil Painting Still Life Vegetables Art Kitchen Decor

A yellow pepper is always great to paint but even more so when it is nestled in bowls of varying sizes and colors.  This combination is one of my favorites.

Harvest Bowl

Oil Painting Vegetable Art Still Life Produce Tomato

Oil on stretched canvas, 9" x 11".

An early harvest of home-grown tomatoes and peppers looked attractive in a blue and white bowl.  I loved the colors and arranging the cherry tomatoes.  Of course those little ones didn't always want to stay in their places.

Celebrities

Oil Painting Art Still Life Tomato Garden Organic

Oil on Raymar Panel, 10" x 12".

This is a painting from the past of some of my home-grown tomatoes in a favorite bowl.  It's always interesting to see one of my older paintings and experience my feelings about it now.  Well, I like many things about it, but I see some areas that I would do differently.  And I'm really looking forward to tomato season again!

Garden Radishes

Oil Painting Still Life Art Vegetables Garden Organic

Oil on Raymar panel, 8" x 6".

I changed my palette of colors a bit to paint these attractive radishes and came up with some new mixtures for greens and grays.  I'm still debating the look, but it felt like a good change while I was in the process.  The beautiful color patterns of radishes always make me smile anyway.

Garlic and Crock

Oil Still Life Painting Organic Vegetables Kitchen Art Crock Jar Pot

Oil on canvas, 10" x 8"

This time I attempted a group of garlic as the star of the painting.  I like their subtle color and the forms the bulbs make together.  I hadn't planned to render the objects with as much realism as I did, but that is what happened when I put paint to canvas.  My vision changes after I begin a painting many times (fortunately or unfortunately). The reflections on the table were interesting to me also.

Red Onions and Garlic

Oil Still Life Painting Organic Vegetables Kitchen Art Glass Bottle

Oil on canvas hardboard, 10" x 8"

I really wanted the title of the painting to include "green bottle" but that would be too long I thought.  The things I enjoyed were the strong light falling across the onions and garlic and also the many reflections and shapes in the green glass bottle.  This was definitely a fun piece, but it was one of those paintings that I feel I had included too many details and wasn't what I had envisioned when I started.

Radish Family

Oil Still Life Painting Vegetable Garden Organic Kitchen Art

Oil on hardboard, 10" x 8"

I liked the feeling of movement that I saw with the radish tails and their leafy tops in my arrangement of these fresh radishes.  I grow different types for a variety of colors and shapes.  It's a wonder to me how painting simple food subjects seems to be so satisfying.
