Spring flowers are blooming profusely in the garden of this house in France where Boris, an Old English Sheepdog, resides. I had posted a photo of this painting as a work in progress recently and this is the finished piece. I enjoyed putting all of the shapes and colors of the landscape together with the features of the house and patio. But the most important element was the beautiful Sheepdog. He looked right at home in his surroundings.

Morning ImpressionsOil Painting Cow Art Portrait Farm Animals

I've been working on a series of studies with this particular landscape scene and this is the first one that I am happy with. I wanted to keep the dramatic colors of a dawn somewhat muted in this pastoral setting. I may change the position of the cow for the next one and/or my palette colors. Hopefully this fun experimentation and exercise will bring about some great insight. I know I love pushing the colors together so far.

Rufous HummingbirdOil Painting Bird Art Portrait Wildlife Animals

Oil on canvas, 7" x 5".

I'm looking forward to the little hummers returning here this spring. This type, the Rufous, is more of a Pacific coast visitor so I haven't seen him in my gardens, but I think he is very handsome and wanted to paint his portrait. I have the Ruby-throated hummingbirds at my feeders and have painted them several times. It's cool to see them perching for a few seconds on a feeder with their wings folded. I've also seen them perching in trees while resting between fights at the flowers and feeders. Having them buzz loudly close to my head is a weird feeling and that happened when I had three feeders being heavily guarded by these little warriors at the same time.

I finished another commissioned house painting and this one included an Old English Sheepdog. I'm awaiting approval from the client and when (if) I post it I'm considering posting first a work-in-progress painting since I did remember to take a photo this time(!) before I went on to complete the painting.

On the homefront, we've had a nice break in the weather and Rick and I have been having fun turning over garden soil and planting spring crops like sweet red onions, turnips and radishes. I still have some spinach that I covered up over the winter and will still have to keep watch on when the temps are supposed to fall well below freezing at night. Oh, and bought some yellow/orange tulip bulbs already sprouting that I hope to paint.

I was in the mood to spin the color wheel when I painted this still life with a sunflower as the star performer. It brightened up a dreary winter day for me and I was energized for a while. That energy suddenly seemed to make my strokes of paint thicker and more decisive. It's fun to get enough paint in place and be able to carve through it again later. You also can't be in a bad mood while experiencing a sunflower taking shape on your canvas. Let the pigments loose! Or, something like that. :)

This rabbit appears somewhat camouflaged with its coloring being so similar to the snowy landscape. I painted this from a photo my daughter took near her home in KC. DaybreakRooster Oil Painting Farm Animal Art Chicken Fowl

Oil on stretched canvas, 12" x 12" x 3/4".

An energetic and colorful rooster is stretching his wings in anticipation of another day. The background has some mystery and I want the viewers to envision where they think he is. He could be walking on pavement in a neighborhood on a Polynesian island or walking near the edge of a body of water. That was just a couple of ideas I had while painting him.
This painting is on a canvas that is stapled in the back and the sides are painting making it ready to hang unframed if desired.

Bright and cheerful Ladybugs are always welcome in gardens and on our hands, arms, hats, etc. I'm thankful for their gentle presence and gorgeous, colorful bodies and I don't like to see them leave. The Ladybug painting is one of many ACEO paintings I painted from which I learned a great deal. They helped me immensely with painting form and details quickly. I want to return to the lessons learned as much as I can.

Striking old-fashioned hollyhocks will be blooming profusely again in another five months and I'm looking forward to it! That seems like a long time from now. My flower patches are buried under several inches of snow, but that should be melted in a few days fortunately. I love to paint heat-loving hollyhocks in cold winter months, and I especially love painting them in watercolor.

I purchased some very large Gerbera Daisies to paint and this was the first arrangement I went to work on for a still life. The flower was painted in a chunky soup cup and I loved the colors of the shadows and half-tones that resulted from the lighting. We see blue herons near the wetlands where I live in Arkansas and I've tried several times to get photos of one before it leaves the scene and I've had no luck. But a friend captured one beautifully and I painted this heron from her photo. It was such a serene setting with the big bird in the still, shallow water which reflected the lovely blue sky. The bright sunlight made deep, interesting shadows and I knew I wanted to paint it. Thanks, Jeanette!

I thought that some of the Irises that I photographed seemed like pink gems so that is how I painted them. They have lush tones with dramatically flowing petals. They are contrasted nicely by the thick greenery of the leaves and stalks. The barely opened buds are held high on strong stems with these Bearded Irises.

This is an earlier animal portrait of mine. I painted this multi-colored fluffy cat on a windowsill with his shadow falling on a table covered with a red cloth. I loved the composition and controlling the values for this one. This pose is very "cat-like" and he has the comfortable attitude of a cat allowing humans to also live in his home.

Unfolding Magnolia Bloom Oil Still Life Flower Southern Magnolia Tree

This is the second painting of this southern magnolia bloom with leaves that was done from an indoor photoshoot of a lovely bloom from one of my trees earlier this year. The creamy-white petals are painted in the interesting shapes they make as they unfold. They also bounce around the reflected cast shadow colors of the glossy green leaves. I think they make very interesting subjects for botanical still lifes!

Clusters of cherry red currants growing on the vine painted in transparent watercolors is my painting for today. I've been going back and forth between watercolors and oils and I don't know what that means except that it's been interesting. I love the qualities of both I guess. "Hidden passages" can be made in watercolors and that's a fun and mysterious thing.

What did I do after Thanksgiving? I painted a pig. It's kind of a cute pig if you appreciate their looks in general. If not, you won't think he's cute at all. I reworked my hibiscus painting when I realized I liked it much better in this vertical format. Tropical and enticing hibiscus blooms, buds and foliage in a large painting and ready to hang. The sunlight flooding down from above on these wildflowers made an exciting pattern on the blue vase and the white surface of the table. I was interested in the vibration between the light and shadow shapes and the colors of the back-lit petals produced from the strong light source in this painting. The 1 inch sides of the cradle board are painted so framing is optional.

Hang Over Oil Dog Pet Art Portraits Jack Russell Terrier

My painting of this playful young Jack Russell Terrier on her back and head hanging from a chair was included in the juried competition, Art Show at the Dog Show, in Wichita, KS earlier this year. JRTs are so expressive at any given time and I liked the challenge of painting this little dog in what is maybe one of the terriers' favorite positions.
The painting is on gallery-wrapped canvas with the sides painted.

Chewy Oil Lop Eared Rabbit Pet Art Farm Animals Wildlife

This was a commissioned portrait of a Lop Eared rabbit named Chewy, and I painted him busy doing one of his favorite things on a colorful gift. He is described as a wonderful family pet. I surely would enjoy petting his ears and holding him. I don't know what my dogs and cat would think about it if I had one of these cute rabbits though.

Nasturtium Jewels Oil Fall Still Life Garden Flowers Mixed Colors

Oil on canvas board, 8" x 10" x 3/4".

These nasturtiums were welcoming our cooler weather and showing their bright, mulit-colored blooms and vining out on my patio. The plants seem to just barely hang on during the long, hot months and then come to life again as most other flowers are dying back. I placed them in small tea strainer to paint them. I think their round-ish shaped leaves are also very attractive. I intended to keep this still life looser than usual as I am experimenting with different approaches to subjects. This painting has staple-free sides that are painted if you'd like to hang it unframed.

I think the color combinations in this painting of a blue/black/white rooster work well. The green and yellow colors of the background compliment the red wattle and comb of the rooster and I liked the effect of bringing the white top feathers down and over the compact dark blue body feathers. The painted staple-free sides of the canvas make framing optional as it can be hung as is if desired.

Mum Display Oil Chrysanthemum Fall Still Life Garden Flowers Landscape

Oil on canvas board, 8" x 10".

I've been motivated by the gorgeous fall colors which always include the profuse mums that we see in our area. I did a 8 x 10 as a small study for a larger painting to come. This landscaped garden displayed a curving row of mums spilling over a low rock wall with some potted flowers adding to the colors. I kept a looser feel to the brushwork and concentrated on masses of form and values. I was happy with it and am inspired to do more!

Grey horses are fascinating for me to paint. I entitled this painting "Shimmer" simply because as I was in the process of painting the subtle changes in the skin tones of the horse I observed that this seemed to make its form shimmer with light. Reflections of Springtime Oil Daffodils Spring Still Life Garden Flowers Botanical

Oil on cradleboard, 8" x 8" x 3/4".

This early spring painting of daffodils in a clear globe vase was a study in reflections. The reflections of light appear in the water and petals in the vase and the same light is reflected onto the top of the wood surface of a piece of furniture. The petals of the daffodils are semi-transparent and make interesting shapes to paint. Their faces are also fun with the yellow/orange ruffles and dark centers.

Her Pony Oil Pet Art Portraits Shetland Horse Farm Animals

A Shetland pony was giving rides to children and I took photos of her while she was resting from her work. She was wearing pink and red tack and had lovely, soulful eyes and a thick blonde mane and tail. I thought about the many little girls who would love to find her in their backyards! Well, actually, I would love to find her too.
