Many times I wonder what an artist was actually viewing when painting something specific so I included this reference for others to see what I was viewing while I painted. I like to paint my own vision into the subject and that makes it feel "just right".

Sable Papillon Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Miniature

Oil on hardboard, 3.5" x 2.5".

This is a favorite ACEO size painting of mine from the past. It looks just like my little Papillon, Nina, who graced my life for 13 years. I love the Papillons' earnest and intelligent looks along with their sweetness of disposition. I haven't painted this small size in quite a while and when I look at many of my older ones with a fresh eye, I like the way that they come together as a larger piece when enlarged on the monitor. There's something to be learned from that and I'm beginning to understand it (internalize it?!) Maybe it's the look of simpler, bolder strokes made with determination. . . .

I'd love to paint a similar painting in a size you'd prefer! I've been busy getting paintings finished for a couple of competitions coming up soon and also for a charity silent auction. There will be fresh daily paintings coming very soon!

Two young horses are captured in an early morning pasture in this painting. I liked painting the subtleties of light on the forms of the colt and filly. Naturally, trust is implied with one resting its head on the other and it's a feeling I get from the painting, but I didn't want to overstate it.

I bought these little gems from our local farmers' market in downtown Ft. Smith, Arkansas. I quickly arranged them for a painting and this was the result. These little Pattypan squash come in many variaties and are also called Granny squash and Scallop squash, along with many other names. They also vary in color. The ones I purchased were a deep gold color and I knew they would look good with the dark eggplant's purple tones.

This 10 x 8 commissioned portrait of a Shetland pony sold for $125. Please ask me about a similar painting if your are interested. I think the longish hair on her neck and chin add to her charm. And also the hair on her stout little ears. I've painted Welsh ponies too, and I believe they are usually slightly larger than the Shetlands. If anyone knows more information of interest about these two breeds please share it with us! I adore ponies of all sizes. I feel most comfortable around those who don't kick . . . . . or nip . . . . . !

For those of you who like fresh, homemade salsa, you'll recognize the main ingredients needed to make it. I painted my subjects - tomato, garlic and jalepeno pepper - near a brightly lit window so that they glowed from the sun. Their colors reflect on each other and onto the small plate. This says "summer" to me and I like the excitement of the broken color!

My second in a series of avocado paintings has two halves standing. One with pit in center and one with scooped-out pit center. These color mixtures are delicious - especially the delicate tones of the "fleshy" part of the avocado fruit. Yes, avocados are fruits, and they're actually berries, technically. Just think of it this way - does it ripen after being picked? If yes, it's a fruit. Maybe more information than you wanted to know . . . . . !

I put some finishing touches on this portrait sketch of a young blonde girl with an almost pouty expression that I've had in my studio for a while. I liked her unkept appearance and the loose feel of the painting. In truth, I didn't want to overdue it and add unneeded details that would subtract from the painting in the end. This kind of portrait work is rewarding to me as an artist.

I was going for the look of a traditional still life painting with dramatic lighting The ice-cream "dome" emerges from darkness to meet the light and I think is the star of the show. The cherries are the supporting characters as they stand in a melting puddle of vanilla ice cream. Well, that's about as descriptive as I can manage at the moment. A slice of watermelon from a melon in my garden was a terrific subject for a still life. The most fun was painting the grooves or "sockets" containing the seeds. Lots of juicy paint was applied while I was painting this. Sometimes working fast with a loaded brush does just what I want and I think I should try it more often. We planted several varieties of watermelon this year and I'm pretty sure this was a "Congo". And in case you're interested, yes, it was very sweet!.

Bell peppers aren't available at the Farmers' Market yet this year; these were painted from last summer's visit. I was interested in their shapes in the gray cardboard containers as seen from above. I built up their colors and form with layered watercolor glazes and was happy with how the peppers eventually "popped up" to be seen by the viewer.

These very exotic orchids were for sale at our local lawn and garden show this spring. While I was taking photos of them, the vendor joked that she should charge for each photo! She must have had many people admiring them with their cameras. I loved the allure of their color and movement and I had never seen such long, thick petals on an orchid. I used thick paint for many of the edges of the petals to add emphasize to their forms. The leaves and stems were interesting too and added so much to the finished painting.

The warm colors of the red/yellow tulip backround worked nicely with this grey tabby kitty subject I think. Truthfully, the fun of it was in creating thick strokes of paint and "feathering" them out with a long, thin rigger brush to create the striped pattern and fluffy look of the cute kitten. The 3/4" sides are painted so framing is optional!

The miniature donkeys still have their thick winter coats at this time of year. Lots of currying is needed to make this little guy slick for summer. Sebastian is a beautiful Turkish Angora cat and so he has a a distincitve (and distinguished) look. He obviously enjoys the outdoors as he is captured peering out from among the foliage and flowers on a sunny day near his home. Spring flowers are blooming profusely in the garden of this house in France where Boris, an Old English Sheepdog, resides. I had posted a photo of this painting as a work in progress recently and this is the finished piece. I enjoyed putting all of the shapes and colors of the landscape together with the features of the house and patio. But the most important element was the beautiful Sheepdog. He looked right at home in his surroundings.

This unfinished commissioned piece is of a beautiful home in France and an Old English Sheepdog included among the spring flowers. I actually remembered to pause and photograph it after I had it blocked in. Wow, I was lovin' the colors in this painting and the flow of it. I'll post the finished painting soon.

Rabbits are very soft! That's what I kept thinking as I was painting this. I came very close to adopting one because they are almost irresistable. I painted this mother and one of her young nesting among some tall grass and daffodils. Spring is arriving and the days are getting longer. . . . and the time change is coming soon. . . .

Morning ImpressionsOil Painting Cow Art Portrait Farm Animals

I've been working on a series of studies with this particular landscape scene and this is the first one that I am happy with. I wanted to keep the dramatic colors of a dawn somewhat muted in this pastoral setting. I may change the position of the cow for the next one and/or my palette colors. Hopefully this fun experimentation and exercise will bring about some great insight. I know I love pushing the colors together so far.

Rufous HummingbirdOil Painting Bird Art Portrait Wildlife Animals

Oil on canvas, 7" x 5".

I'm looking forward to the little hummers returning here this spring. This type, the Rufous, is more of a Pacific coast visitor so I haven't seen him in my gardens, but I think he is very handsome and wanted to paint his portrait. I have the Ruby-throated hummingbirds at my feeders and have painted them several times. It's cool to see them perching for a few seconds on a feeder with their wings folded. I've also seen them perching in trees while resting between fights at the flowers and feeders. Having them buzz loudly close to my head is a weird feeling and that happened when I had three feeders being heavily guarded by these little warriors at the same time.

I finished another commissioned house painting and this one included an Old English Sheepdog. I'm awaiting approval from the client and when (if) I post it I'm considering posting first a work-in-progress painting since I did remember to take a photo this time(!) before I went on to complete the painting.

On the homefront, we've had a nice break in the weather and Rick and I have been having fun turning over garden soil and planting spring crops like sweet red onions, turnips and radishes. I still have some spinach that I covered up over the winter and will still have to keep watch on when the temps are supposed to fall well below freezing at night. Oh, and bought some yellow/orange tulip bulbs already sprouting that I hope to paint.
