Red Onions and Garlic

Oil Still Life Painting Organic Vegetables Kitchen Art Glass Bottle

Oil on canvas hardboard, 10" x 8"

I really wanted the title of the painting to include "green bottle" but that would be too long I thought.  The things I enjoyed were the strong light falling across the onions and garlic and also the many reflections and shapes in the green glass bottle.  This was definitely a fun piece, but it was one of those paintings that I feel I had included too many details and wasn't what I had envisioned when I started.

Begonia Blooms

Oil Painting Flower Art Still Life Botanical Garden

Watercolor on watercolor canvasboard, 8.75" x 11".

I kept watch over my begonia bulb after planting it in a pot and made sure it received plenty of shade so that I could finally enjoy its beautiful leaves and blooms.  My attention to it paid off with these delicately-colored flowers.  I decided to paint them in watercolor on the watercolor canvas I've been experimenting with for some time.  The watercolor paint can be applied in puddle-like forms to make the shapes of the composition which I find interesting.  And many layers can be built up if  I'm careful not to disturb the layers underneath with a heavy hand.  I sprayed the painting with clear acrylic so that it doesn't need to be framed under glass like watercolors on paper must be framed.

Bee Among Azaleas

Oil Painting Flower Art Still Life Garden Honey Bee Insects

Oil on canvas hardboard, 9" x 12"

An artist friend photographed a wonderful image of a bee busy at work on a cluster of pink azalea petals.  It became one of many challenge images to paint in our artist group.  The mediums used were oil, watercolor and colored pencil.  This oil painting was my contribution.  I love the translucent wings of the bee covering the azalea bloom.  I still haven't painted the bowl of lemons that the others have finished.

Aussie Portrait

Oil Painting Dog Art Pet Portraits Australian Shepherd

Oil on canvas hardboard, 6" x 8"

Australian Shepherds are definitely easy on the eye and fun to paint for me as a dog admirer.  Their eyes are startling, yes, but what I really like are their folded ears which perk up when they are interested in something or someone.  I had a great time with the grays, whites, black, browns, and the overlapping of all of them in this piece.

Radish Family

Oil Still Life Painting Vegetable Garden Organic Kitchen Art

I liked the feeling of movement that I saw with the radish tails and their leafy tops in my arrangement of these fresh radishes.  I grow different types for a variety of colors and shapes.  It's a wonder to me how painting simple food subjects seems to be so satisfying.

Basset Fenced In

Oil Painting Dog Art Pet Portraits Hound

Oil on canvas hardboard, 10" x 8"

This piece was painted from one of several photos I took of the wandering hound, Molly, when she was lost for a time from her home.  Here she is behind a neighbor's fence waiting for her family to fetch her.  She gave me her friendly expression, or maybe it was a pleading one to be let out.  Bassets are full of wonderful expressions and always interesting to me.

Avocado No.3

Oil Painting Vegetable Art Still Life Garden

Oil on hardboard panel, 8" x 6"

The flesh of an avocado is one of my favorite things to eat and it also makes for a rich subject to paint.  I delight in the color and the thick, creamy form that it makes inside of the skin.  Of course, the large pit remains a center of interest along with the flesh when I paint this fruit that tastes like a vegetable.  Yum!

Lacy Gladiolus

Oil Painting Flower Sword Lilly Art Still Life Botanical Garden

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 6"

This was my first home-grown Gladiolus and also my first painting of one.  I decided to paint the bloooms close-up and as more of a series of shapes in sunlight and shade rather than complete flowers.  This is what seemed to appeal to me as I observed them.  I may decide to paint them in more of a traditional manner also!  I didn't know that Glads are in the Iris family and are sometimes called Sword Lillies.

I wanted to capture this little guy's expression and his flowing locks of hair.  And I really had fun with his flipped-up tongue and tiny teeth.  Many of these terriers have an underbite but I don't think this one has.  Yorkies are bright-eyed and eager to please (if you don't spoil them too much!)  I know from exprience.

This rooster was captured from behind and I like his concerned expression and ruffled tail feathers.  It was painted from a great photo I used from wetcanvas.com.  I can't imagine that it was an easy photo to take from this angle but I love it!  There were lots of possibilities for titles for this one.  I'm sure you can think of some!  I'd like to hear them too.

Bearded Irisis

Oil Painting Still Life Flower Art Floral Garden

Oil on stretched back-stapled canvas 10" x 8" x 3/4"

These hybrid bearded Irises were given to me as rhizomes a few years ago and they were such beautiful surprises when they bloomed! Rich, multi-toned petals seemed to be lit from within by the sun and their bright yellow centers. I felt like pushing and reinforcing the stain-glassed appearance of these flowers. I enjoyed playing with the color and it left me wanting to do more.

Sweet Zebra

Oil Painting Animal Art Wildlife Africa

Oil on canvas board, 12" x 9"

The most friendly and photogenic zebra I've met so far was this lovely one who posed for pictures again and again at the Safari Zoo in Gentry, Arkansas which I visited this spring.  I was really impressed with her when she bowed her neck and gave me her lovely eye.  She and her many friends seemed very happy roaming about in their woody pastures.  The sun highlighted her forehead and ear and this made me decide to paint her. It was as much fun as painting a horse for me.

Boston's Nap Interrupted

Oil Painting Pet Art Animal Terrier Portrait

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10"

This sleepy Boston Terrier looks so comfortable in a curled-up position in his favorite place.  I love his expression with an eye looking toward the person (photographer!) who is interrupting his slumber.  His handsome, shiny coat was fun to paint with the many highlights on his dark hair.  He even has a "kiss" marking on the top of his head which is a round spot of white surrounded by black.  I know he's not always this calm.  This dog has energy to burn and will play for hours.  Thanks to all of my generous dog-loving friends who send me inspirational photos like this one!

Toad Sunning

Oil Painting Animal Art Toad Frog Amphibians

Oil on canvas hardboard, 5" x 7"

It's toad season and they appear in places I expect them but they still startle me sometimes!  I caught this guy lazily sunning himself on a landscape block near my herb garden.  He didn't mind at all that I took photos of him at different angles.  I liked this pose of the toad with his long cast shadow.  The fun part was defining his basic shapes quickly and then adding some bumps at the end to finish the painting.  I think my use of a limited primary palette with this one helped me also.

Single Rosebud

Oil Painting Flower Still Life Art Garden Glass Vase

Oil on stretched canvas. 6" x 8"

I'm still stuck on roses.  This is a painting from the past of my Joseph's Coat climbing rose.  I painted it from above in a tiny bud vase and I very much liked this perspective of the flower.  This rose changes colors.  It changes from yellow/orange with tinges of red to pure red as the bloom gets older.  For the last couple of years, however, the buds on my plant have started out a solid red and stayed that color.  I don't know if this is a common occurrence with roses as they age or if there's something I should be doing different.  Advice is always welcome as well as comments!

Garden Seat

Oil Painting Landscape Art Garden Flowers Adirondack Chair

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11"

I combined some favorite flowers and a weathered adirondack chair for this piece.  The fence with a climbing rose makes a secluded place in the garden for the chair and a container of pansies.  Ahh, springtime!  The humingbirds are already here and soon the daylilies will be blooming too.  Maybe we'll have a few nice spring days after all of the flooding recently and before the heat of the summer gets here.

Blooming Peonies

Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Botanical Gardens

Oil on hardboard, 10" x 8".

I usually paint my peonies each year and this piece has them in different stages of bloom. Their white petals reflect the light and colors from their surroundings and are fascinating to observe. The buds are crimsom-rimmed round jewels that slowly open to large, heavy heads that reach out from their shady location. I enjoyed this one!

Sunny Side Duck

Oil Painting Farm Animal Palette Knife Art

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 10"

I have several potential paintings from photos I took at the Wilderness Drive-Through (and walk-thru) Safari in Gentry, Arkansas which has many exotic animals.  I chose this non-exotic duck as the first painting because of the great sunlight effects on the white duck who was so friendly to me and my camera.  She radiated with great reflected colors all around her.  I toured the zoo with some artist friends a couple of weeks ago and we definitely were inspired to paint the animals from our experience in this amazing place!

Oil Painting Still Life Pepper Art Vegetable Garden

Oil on canvas hardboard, 9" x 12"

I had a wonderful Easter and was happy to complete this still life during all of the heavy rain/hail storms we've been having for several days and more to come!  Everything is super-green outside and it is a treat for the eyes.  Well it's a treat when it stops raining for a little while.  I painted the red pepper with a blue crackle vase and a white pitcher.  I love the red popping out within the pepper.

Blue Face Angelfish

Oil Painting Exotic Marine Life Tropical Art

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 10"

My painting group was given a photo of this tropical fish as a challenge painting for all of us to paint in our own styles.  An artist and photographer friend had taken the photo at an aquarium in San Diego where she lived for several years and still visits.  I had fun with it and didn't worry about too much detail.  I was pleased with the suggestion of the pink coral in the background and just the overall "underwater" look of the painting.  Hope it comes across like this to viewer.

Oil on canvas board, 7" x 5"

In the mood for some palette knife painting, I chose my bright red/orange tulips for a subject.  They were standing up straight in a stiff wind with their wavy leaves leaning in all directions.  I like the way the sun highlights the blooms and makes them glow while leaving the background foliage darkly shaded.

Some Yorkies wear their hair up and here is a painting of one with that bright terrier look that make them so endearing.  I love the light fawn coloring of their faces against the silver/blue grey of their coats.  This one has his ears trimmed.  Hmmm, maybe this was actually a Silky Terrier.  It's been a while since I painted him.

Purple Magnolia

Oil Painting Flowers Still Life Art Jane Saucer

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8"

A little clipping taken from my Jane Magnolia tree served as my model for this still life. I love these blooms, but the tree is a little way from my house and I kept forgetting to wander out there and keep an eye on it.  I thought I might be too late to get a bloom to paint but I got a beauty!  These spring Magnolia blossoms don't get as much attention as the white southern Magnolia blossoms which bloom in the summer.

Basset Hound in Red Wagon

Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Animals

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 8"

My country neighborhood was visited recently by a friendly young Basset Hound on the loose and I took several photos of her.  She followed us on walks and played with the neighbors' dogs.  She had owners who loved her and were looking for her and put an ad in our local paper.  She was returned home but I still had many great photos, so this is the first painting I did of her.  I put her in a child's red wagon.  She definitely was a sweetheart!  Her name is Mollly.

Landscape Color Study

Oil Painting Abstract Lake Landscape

Oil on canvas board, 8" x 8"

In the painting class I attend we have been making color charts and doing paintings from using the colors that are leftover from all of the mixes.  This painting resulted after a color chart of three primaries and white.  I am always amazed at the amount of variation that is available from using such a limited palette.  I liked the soft and vibrant colors of this landscape painting.  It was so interesting to see what the other students painted with their chosen primaries.  Really interesting and fun!

Posing Manx

Oil Painting Pet Cat Art Feline Portrait

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

I captured the cat grooming herself in a lawn chair on her front porch and I was just another visitor.  She seemed to enjoy the attention as I photographed her.  I decided I liked the twising pose of this yellow and white Manx and painted her this way.  This tailless cat is true to her breed being a robust hunter with a mellow disposition. I liked the image she made as she stared straight at me against the blue and white striped background.

Young Appaloosa

Oil Painting Horse Art Farm Animal Portrait

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 10"

I went back to painting a horse again in this one - an Appaloosa colt backlit by an evening sunset (or sunrise!).  The low-key values on most of the body of the colt contrasts with the brightly lit areas of the edge of his chest and upper back legs.  I wanted to portray a serene mood in this piece and I also admired his spotted coat.  A little bit of information about this breed of horse:  the Appaloosa is known for its colorful leopard-spotted coat pattern.  It is best known as a stock horse used in a number of western riding disciplines.              Horses are always a joy to paint!

Chicks in Twig Basket

Easter Oil Painting Chickens Art Farm Animals

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

Baby chicks seem to glow in the sun if the lighting is just right and in this scene I wanted these three to come to life in the twiggy basket. I think children who grow up in the country are so lucky! Snowy Ridge

Oil Painting Winter Landscape Rural Arkansas Lincoln Lake Park

Oil on stretched canvas, 16" x 12"

While trailing along with our local hiking club I saw some great scenery at Lincoln Lake Park  in Northwest Arkansas.  Our snowfall in Ft. Smith (farther south) had already melted so it was great fun to hike in the warmer temps and still see snow covering much of the landscape.  The movement of lights and darks in the snow and green moss covering the the rocky slopes was interesting and I thought that this painting told the best story of the sights.  There was no path to follow to the top in case you were interested.

Spring Hares

Oil Painting Rabbit Art Pet Animal Portrait Spring Wildlife

Oil on hardboard, 7" x 9"

I painted these spotted rabbits bunched together with some spring colors and blooming flowers happening in the background.  Sometimes the looser approach is best when I  have an idea about a piece, and I went with that thought with this painting.  The expressions of the rabbits are what drew me in to begin with and that's what I wanted to portray.

Mourning Dove Preening

Oil Painting Bird Portrait Dove Wildlife

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 8".

This is a second painting of the same dove I painted before. The bird is in a different position on the deck rail and seems to be interrupted in her grooming process and pauses to look.  I used the same colors but different parts of the dove are highlighted and the sunlight catches the ruffled feathers.  Mourning doves are a joy to watch and I always try to avoid frightening them when they are feeding right outside my door.  I wish they wouldn't fly away so quickly at the slightest sound.

A fox in the snow is a great combination for me to paint I've found.  I love the intensity of a fox's gaze.  And his coloring against a cold and stark background adds to the pleasure of the scene I think.  I used lots of thick paint in areas and thoroughly enjoyed the process.  Painting is great fun when it is just that!

Doe Portrait

Oil Painting Deer Art Wildlife Animals

Oil on hardboard, 6" x 6"

One good thing about living where we do (Arkansas river valley) is that deer romp through our rural area right out in the open and don't seem to think much about it.  Our neighbors would agree! The down side is, of course, that they eat tender garden offerings and rub the bark off of young trees. I don't get up early enough (why not?!) to see them in the semi-darkness, but I wanted to paint this doe against a dark background to show off her great features.  So many different tones of red/brown/gray/white and more are apparent in her coloring.  Painting wildlife is comforting to the soul and  a lesson I've known for quite some time I believe.

Winter Female Cardinal

Oil Painting Bird Portrait Wildlife Audubon

Oil on canvas hardboard, 8" x 6".

A female cardinal was posing on a shepherd's hook while waiting her turn at the feeder and looking sweetly "puffed up".  Male cardinals are spectacularly flashy and I love them, but I also think the females are gorgeous in their own way. This one received her due attention I think.  I'm glad to be distracted by birds in winter!

Blushing Granny

Watercolor Painting Apple Still Life Fruit

Watercolor on paper, 5" x 5".

While still fooling around with the single green apple and shadow images, this was one of my favorites.  I love its simplicity and interesting character of form, lines and color. Your comments are welcome and I always enjoy talking to you about my art!

Cat Tracks

Watercolor Painting Pet Portrait Tabby Feline Art Snow

Watercolor on watercolor canvasboard, 5" x 7".

A bulky Tabby cat with lovely markings was making her way across my front yard after our last 6 inches of snow had fallen.  I captured her with my camera and then again in watercolor.  I used watercolor canvas and the painting is sealed with acrylic spray and will not be required to be framed under glass.  The long shadow she made in the afternoon on the brilliant snow was why I grabbed my camera, and the clear footprints were what I noticed later that made me decide to paint her.

Blushing Green Apple

Oil Painting Still Life Apples Fruit Art

Oil on canvas, 5" x 5" x 1.5".

This time I painted a single green apple on a square canvas which felt like a good fit to me. The interesting parts were defining the roundness of the apple and working with the complimentary colors of the apple and background.  Edges were important too.  I'm becoming more aware of working with edges that are lost to the background and others that are clearly defined.

Simple Fruit

Watercolor Painting Still Life Pear Grape Fruit Art

Watercolor on paper, 5" x 5".

The snow outside makes my studio much brighter and I like to make watercolor studies of  fruit on these cold winter days, especially when the sun makes an appearance.  The long cast shadows of the grape and pear are equally important elements of the painting.  Reflected colors mixed in also add to the painting adventure.  It's always nice to have watercolors to go back to after I've had several oil-painitng challenges and headaches!

Bulldog Puppy

Oil Painting Pet Portrait Art English Dog Canine

Oil on hardboard, 2.5" x 3.5"

I love English Bulldogs and this an earlier miniature painting that I did of one of these guys sleeping.  He has gorgeous markings and deep wrinkles. I always stop to photograph one when I get the chance because I think their bodies and facial expressions are irresistible.  They're so cute when they're sleeping!

Little Green Ones

Oil Painting Still Life Apples Fruit Art

Oil on hardboard, 5" x 7".

Another green apple painting.  I did one last year that I was happy with using just one apple.  I went back to my original idea and used three this time.  I love the colors and their contrasts with each other.  Also, I'm always amazed at how just the shapes of the apples (or other fruit) and their stems can make an interesting painting.
