Eager Chihuahua Puppy Oil Painting Dog Art Pet Portrait

"Eager Chihuahua Puppy"

Oil on hardboard panel. 7" x 5".

Chihuahua energy is electric and contagious. Their humans are devoted to them. This portrait was a lot of fun to paint and I felt the mental energy in this little guy. I'd love to paint him again for you or paint a different portrait from a photo of your pet.

Pie a` la mode Oil Painting Still Life Cherry Food Kitchen Art Fruit

Oil on museum quality panel, 6" x 6.5".

I was going for the look of a traditional still life painting with dramatic lighting The ice-cream "dome" emerges from darkness to meet the light and I think is the star of the show. The cherries are the supporting characters as they stand in a melting puddle of vanilla ice cream. Well, that's about as descriptive as I can manage at the moment. I'm sure there's room for improvement and comments are always welcome.

Apple Shining Oil Painting Gala Fruit Still Life Art Food Kitchen

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8"

The traditional apple was my latest model for a "food" still life painting. I painted a colorful Gala on its side and gave it a long, uplifting stem. I love the yellow and yellow/green markings on these warm red apples. The outcome was pleasing to my eye. I guess I will always love painting apples even after I think I'm bored with them.

Fresh Slice Oil Painting Watermelon Fruit Still Life Art Food Garden

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10"

A slice of watermelon from a melon in my garden was a terrific subject for a still life. The most fun was painting the grooves or "sockets" containing the seeds. Lots of juicy paint was applied while I was painting this. Sometimes working fast with a loaded brush does just what I want and I think I should try it more often. We planted several varieties of watermelon this year and I'm pretty sure this was a "Congo". And in case you're interested, yes, it was very sweet!.

Orange Pieces Standing Watercolor Painting Still Life Art Fruit Kitchen Citrus

Watercolor on paper, 8" x 6".

Placing orange slices against a window is one way to get them to glow with sunlight and I decided to arrange this group on the sill of an octagon-shaped window. The colors were glorious and just what I wanted. I liked having a "leaner" in there also.

Bananas 'N Grapes Watercolor Painting Still Life Art Fruit Kitchen

Watercolor on paper, 8" x 8".

I've continued with another food painting because I'm having fun with them. In this one, I loved the way the watercolors glowed in the bananas and red grapes and also in their their cast shadows. It's a simple arrangement viewed from above and I was happy with the rhythm of of the shapes and values playing off of each other.

Snaps and Blueberries Oil Painting Still Life Kitchen Art Russel Wright China Gingersnaps Food

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

A few of my favorite things to eat - gingersnaps and blueberries. These crispy cookies have a very strong ginger flavor and they look good in my shallow yellow bowl I think. The blueberries are eye-candy too and are the stars in the painting. I've been having some fun painting food recently!

Red and Yellow Bells Watercolor Painting Still Life Art Vegetables Gardens Farmers Market

Watercolor on paper, 10" x 8".

Bell peppers aren't available at the Farmers' Market yet this year; these were painted from last summer's visit. I was interested in their shapes in the gray cardboard containers as seen from above. I built up their colors and form with layered watercolor glazes and was happy with how the peppers eventually "popped up" to be seen by the viewer.

Red Orchids Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Botanical Gardens

Oil on clayboard panel, 13" x 9".

These very exotic orchids were for sale at our local lawn and garden show this spring. While I was taking photos of them, the vendor joked that she should charge for each photo! She must have had many people admiring them with their cameras. I loved the allure of their color and movement and I had never seen such long, thick petals on an orchid. I used thick paint for many of the edges of the petals to add emphasize to their forms. The leaves and stems were interesting too and added so much to the finished painting.

Bulldog Puppy Tug Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Animals English Bulldog

Oil on Canvas Board, 7" x 9".

I photographed a sweet, little English Bulldog pup playing with a young boy. The puppy went from a sleepy youngster to a determined bulldog with a plan of action in a matter of seconds when he saw the boy walking by. So cute! I hoped to capture his expression and adventure in paint.

Tabby Kitten in Red Tulips Oil Painting Gray Tabby Cat Pet Art Flowers Animals Botanical

Oil on Canvas, 8" x 10" x 3/4".

The warm colors of the red/yellow tulip backround worked nicely with this grey tabby kitty subject I think. Truthfully, the fun of it was in creating thick strokes of paint and "feathering" them out with a long, thin rigger brush to create the striped pattern and fluffy look of the cute kitten. The 3/4" sides are painted so framing is optional!

Border Collie Stare Portrait Watercolor Painting Dog Pet Art

Watercolor on Arches paper, 7 3/4" x 5 3/4".

Border Collies have a beautiful and intense stare when concentrating and I painted a portrait of this one in watercolor. The long hairs of the ears were especially fun to layer in with this medium.

Dutch Irises in Jar Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Blue Ball Ideal Mason Jar Antique

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11" x 1 1/2".

Spring's Dutch Irises are a welcome sight in the garden. I painted a bouquet of them in an old Blue Ball Mason jar on some landscaping stones. I like their bold and carefree feeling.
The deep 1 1/2" sides are painted making the painting ready to hang without framing if desired.

Bananas in Silver Bowl Oil Painting Still Life Art Fruit Food

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

These bananas seemed animated to me while I painted them in a silver bowl. I enjoyed the way the light bounced around in the shapes of the objects as well as the forground and background. Mixing the grays was fun also.

The 3/4" sides are painted making framing optional.

Jelly Roll Oil Painting Still Life Art Pastries Sweets Food

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

It's fun to take creamy paint and make it create forms of something creamy, thick and sweet like this jelly-roll with cherry filling. It looks yummy . . . . . . well, only if you like this kind of food.

Little Buddy Miniature Donkey Oil Painting Pet Art Farm Animals Horse

Oil on Canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

The miniature donkeys still have their thick winter coats at this time of year. Lots of currying is needed to make this little guy slick for summer. His mane and ears can be trimmed too, but I sometimes prefer the fuzzy look. The 3/4' sides are painted making it ready to hang without framing if desired.

Sebastian Watercolor Cat Portrait Painting Pet Art Turkish Angora

Watercolor on Arches, 10" x 8".

Sebastian is a beautiful Turkish Angora cat and so he has a a distincitve (and distinguished) look. He obviously enjoys the outdoors as he is captured peering out from among the foliage and flowers on a sunny day near his home. These cats are very intelligent and agile, and Sebastian loves to play fetch with his toys. The portrait will be a surprise birthday gift for his loving mom.

Joyful Tulips Watercolor Painting Spring Flowers Botanical Art

Watercolor on Arches, 11" x 6 3/4".

I didn't paint these watercolor tulips recently but I wanted to repost them for spring. I really like their "liveliness". I have some new red/orange tulips coming up now and starting to bloom so I look forward to painting them; probably in oil but maybe watercolor also. Their forms and colors are exciting to try to capture in paint.
