Oil on hardboard panel, 5" x 6"
I felt the need to be playful and painted a butterfly painting for some fun this summer. I snapped several photos of a Tiger Swallowtail (I think?) on my Lantana flowers. I loved using a cerulean blue color along with the colors of the flower and plant, and of course, the delicate butterfly with its interesting pattern. The intermingling of colors in the background felt good to me as a backdrop for the "flutterby".
I hope everyone's summer has been good! I'm surely enjoying the slightly cooler temps where I am in Arkansas. I've been thinking of joining a hiking/photography group this fall so that I can gather some inspiration.

Tucked Away Oil Painting Victorian House Portrait Historical Home Architecture Landscape
Oil on hardboard panel, 12" x 9"
Some ideas I finally get around to painting. I found photos I'd taken of a quaint Victorian house in Fayetteville, Arkansas, where I lived previously. A narrow turret on a corner of the house with a tall dark window was attractive and so was the "homey" front porch with geraniums and fern. It looked "set apart" from the rest of the busy world. I think the painting conveys a dreamy sort of feeling and this made it special to me. I think I'd like to find some more old photos for inspiration!

Of course, I didn't at first tell you the problems I had with the painting. I didn't realize I was painting some of the vertical images off center or "cockeyed". A t-square comes in handy in these situations. I should know these things! If you have a photo that you think could be a little piece of something special I'd love to see it.

Cerulean Tube Oil Painting Still Life Art Blue Color
Oil on hardboard panel, 7" x 4"
I had some fun painting one of my tubes of paint - cerulean blue. Also posted is a photo of the "still life" I worked from. Many times I wonder what an artist was actually viewing when painting something specific so I included this reference for others to see what I was viewing while I painted. I like to paint my own vision into the subject and that makes it feel "just right".

Sable Papillon Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Miniature
Oil on hardboard, 3.5" x 2.5".
This is a favorite ACEO size painting of mine from the past. It looks just like my little Papillon, Nina, who graced my life for 13 years. I love the Papillons' earnest and intelligent looks along with their sweetness of disposition. I haven't painted this small size in quite a while and when I look at many of my older ones with a fresh eye, I like the way that they come together as a larger piece when enlarged on the monitor. There's something to be learned from that and I'm beginning to understand it (internalize it?!) Maybe it's the look of simpler, bolder strokes made with determination. . . .
I'd love to paint a similar painting in a size you'd prefer! I've been busy getting paintings finished for a couple of competitions coming up soon and also for a charity silent auction. There will be fresh daily paintings coming very soon!

Pasture Friends Oil Painting Horse Art Farm Animal Portrait Equine
Oil on hardboard, 9" x 12".
Two young horses are captured in an early morning pasture in this painting. I liked painting the subtleties of light on the forms of the colt and filly. Naturally, trust is implied with one resting its head on the other and it's a feeling I get from the painting, but I didn't want to overstate it.

Teresa's Sunflower Oil Painting Still Life Flower Art Botanical Garden
Oil on hardboard panel, 8" x 6"
A friend had a sunflower plant that grew very tall before blooming with this lovely head. I liked the shadows made on the large leaves too. Sunflowers are always a riot of color, and as an artist, you just have to let the painting compose itself and have fun with the color!
