Don't Bother the Rooster

Oil Painting Chicken Art Farm Animal Bird Portrait

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10"

This rooster was captured from behind and I like his concerned expression and ruffled tail feathers.  It was painted from a great photo I used from wetcanvas.com.  I can't imagine that it was an easy photo to take from this angle but I love it!  There were lots of possibilities for titles for this one.  I'm sure you can think of some!  I'd like to hear them too.

Bearded Irisis

Oil Painting Still Life Flower Art Floral Garden

Oil on stretched back-stapled canvas 10" x 8" x 3/4"

These hybrid bearded Irises were given to me as rhizomes a few years ago and they were such beautiful surprises when they bloomed! Rich, multi-toned petals seemed to be lit from within by the sun and their bright yellow centers. I felt like pushing and reinforcing the stain-glassed appearance of these flowers. I enjoyed playing with the color and it left me wanting to do more.

Sweet Zebra

Oil Painting Animal Art Wildlife Africa

Oil on canvas board, 12" x 9"

The most friendly and photogenic zebra I've met so far was this lovely one who posed for pictures again and again at the Safari Zoo in Gentry, Arkansas which I visited this spring.  I was really impressed with her when she bowed her neck and gave me her lovely eye.  She and her many friends seemed very happy roaming about in their woody pastures.  The sun highlighted her forehead and ear and this made me decide to paint her. It was as much fun as painting a horse for me.

Boston's Nap Interrupted

Oil Painting Pet Art Animal Terrier Portrait

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10"

This sleepy Boston Terrier looks so comfortable in a curled-up position in his favorite place.  I love his expression with an eye looking toward the person (photographer!) who is interrupting his slumber.  His handsome, shiny coat was fun to paint with the many highlights on his dark hair.  He even has a "kiss" marking on the top of his head which is a round spot of white surrounded by black.  I know he's not always this calm.  This dog has energy to burn and will play for hours.  Thanks to all of my generous dog-loving friends who send me inspirational photos like this one!

Standing Tall II

Oil Painting Rooster Art Farm Animal Chicken Hay

Oil on canvas, 10" x 8".

A long, tall rooster with an attitude was a commissioned piece that I thoroughly enjoyed painting. I especially liked the way his tail-feathers looked against the cloudy, ominous sky.

Toad Sunning

Oil Painting Animal Art Toad Frog Amphibians

Oil on canvas hardboard, 5" x 7"

It's toad season and they appear in places I expect them but they still startle me sometimes!  I caught this guy lazily sunning himself on a landscape block near my herb garden.  He didn't mind at all that I took photos of him at different angles.  I liked this pose of the toad with his long cast shadow.  The fun part was defining his basic shapes quickly and then adding some bumps at the end to finish the painting.  I think my use of a limited primary palette with this one helped me also.

Single Rosebud

Oil Painting Flower Still Life Art Garden Glass Vase

Oil on stretched canvas. 6" x 8"

I'm still stuck on roses.  This is a painting from the past of my Joseph's Coat climbing rose.  I painted it from above in a tiny bud vase and I very much liked this perspective of the flower.  This rose changes colors.  It changes from yellow/orange with tinges of red to pure red as the bloom gets older.  For the last couple of years, however, the buds on my plant have started out a solid red and stayed that color.  I don't know if this is a common occurrence with roses as they age or if there's something I should be doing different.  Advice is always welcome as well as comments!

Garden Seat

Oil Painting Landscape Art Garden Flowers Adirondack Chair

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11"

I combined some favorite flowers and a weathered adirondack chair for this piece.  The fence with a climbing rose makes a secluded place in the garden for the chair and a container of pansies.  Ahh, springtime!  The humingbirds are already here and soon the daylilies will be blooming too.  Maybe we'll have a few nice spring days after all of the flooding recently and before the heat of the summer gets here.

Blooming Peonies

Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Botanical Gardens

Oil on hardboard, 10" x 8".

I usually paint my peonies each year and this piece has them in different stages of bloom. Their white petals reflect the light and colors from their surroundings and are fascinating to observe. The buds are crimsom-rimmed round jewels that slowly open to large, heavy heads that reach out from their shady location. I enjoyed this one!
