Pumpkin Gourd Oil Painting Still Life Art Ornamental Fall Garden Autumn

I usually buy a sack of miniature, mulit-colored gourds for painting inspiration in the fall.  This time I chose a solid orange one to paint.  I guess you'd call it a dimply, pimply, pumpkin gourd.  (I think gourds are in the pumpkin family but they're not good for eating).  This little orange guy had interesting protrusions to play with in paint.  I like to paint subjects in a light that produces a shadow that includes complimentary colors along with the color of the object that I'm painting.

Young Fisherman Oil Painting Portrait Boy Cane Pole Fishing

I was interested in the light and shade pattern on the boy and ground as he stood in the dappled light with his fishing pole in the water.  It was a wonderful summer scene and I wanted to capture its simplicity and peacefulness.

A few of my fellow artists and I painted from a lovely area here in our town.  It looks out on an inlet of the Arkansas River.  The trees are just barely beginning to turn colors.  It was a pleasant morning to paint outside and it didn't get too breezy until we were packing up to leave!

I am very pleased that my Magnolia trees are making it through our very hot and dry summer and producing some beautiful blooms like this one.  I don't know if my favorite parts to paint are the white petals or the twisting waxy leaves.  But I really enjoy the shadows and the rust-colored undersides of the leaves.
