Sprinkled Chocolate Donut Oil Painting Still Life Art Food Doughnut Kitchen Coffee Bakery

Oil on canvas, 7" x 9".

I appreciate the shine on a chocolate glazed donut after painting this one.  The rich chocolate color is dense with a wonderful reddish-brown in places.  The hole of the donut is a mysterious sphere that draws me in.  The sprinkles on top are playful and have their own voices.

Growing Violets Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Botanical Floral House Plant African

Oil on canvas, 6" x 8".

My African Violets have been perking up and showing their "faces" recently and I painted them illuminated from sunlight streaming through the window.  I like their large soft, fuzzy leaves which fan out in all directions while protecting the delightful purple/blue flowers inside.

Cow Pony Resting Oil Painting Horse Art Portrait Farm Animals Equine

Oil on Canvas, 9" x 12"

This was a working cowboy's horse at a fun local event.  He was in the lead ahead of a covered wagon offering rides to event goers.  He took a break here and was enjoying the attention of many fans around him.  His closed eyes reminded me of gentleness and calm.  I loved his unusual and beautiful face and was especially attracted to the golden mane.

Daffodil Dance Watercolor Flower Art Still Life Botanica Floral

Watercolor on Arches, 13" x 9".

The fresh and transparent appearance of watercolors are great when painting flowers and I wanted these daffodills to burst out with color and movement. I also used pen and ink lines to define the flowers, stems and leaves. Leaving parts of the petals and much of the background white lends a crispness to the painting I think.

Young Redhead Oil Painting Art Portraits People Figure Girl

Oil on canvas, 12 x 9"

I wanted to capture this attractive pose of a girl with beautiful hair.  And I tried to paint her simply but also expressively.  The different shapes that made up the whole form of the figure were interesting and kept me engaged and enthusiastic about the outcome.  That's always a great feeling!

Face to Face Oil Chicken Art Portraits Farm Animal Rooster

Oil on canvas, 8" x 6".

Chickens and roosters are either a little scary or very comical when viewed straight on depending on what the viewer feels.  I don't have an opinion myself.  I'm still considering it from both sides when I look at my own painting here.  But I'm sure I like the subject's energy!

Noble Oil Dog Pet Art Portraits Golden Retriever

Oil on canvas, 9" x 7".

I had a great time playing with the lights and shadows on this beautiful Golden who was squinting in the sun and obviously enjoying herself.  A nice warm day in the fall is always appreciated by nature lovers.  Her "contentedness" was what I wanted to capture in paint.

I'm Listening Watercolor Dog Pet Art Portraits Chihuahua

Watercolor on Arches, 8.5" x 10"

This dog has sunk into her comfy fleece bed and looks like she's ready for a story. I really enjoy working with watercolors to create a sense of mystery with light and shadow. The biggest challenge with watercolors, that many artists know, is the frustration of ruining the beautiful white paper and not being able to fix the problem (save the painting!) as you can with an oil painting.

Frisbee Dog Oil Herding Dog Pet Art Portraits Border Collie

Oil on canvas, 8" x 10".

This Border Collie was one of several talented dogs catching frisbees at a balloon festival in Oklahoma.  All of the dogs were really interesting to watch, but a particular dog was more intense and hyper than the rest I thought.  I took several photos of him and I loved the stance I caught him in. Unfortunately he wasn't very successful at getting a frisbee before one of the other dogs did.  He never stopped trying though!

Spanky and Lilly Oil Yorkie Dog Pet Art Portraits Yorkshire Terrier Commission

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10".

It's hard to contain the personalities and intelligence of these two little sweeties I'm sure, but I did combine their faces on one canvas.  Yorkies are a flurry of blue-grey, tan, red-tan, black, and then grey again.  Their coats are their shining glory!  But their eyes are what steal hearts I think.

Potted Hot Peppers Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Botanical Floral landscape

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8".

I've wanted to paint this container for a long time and this year's gorgeous peppers sprouting from it finally made me do it.  The afternoon sunlight was setting the ornamental peppers on fire and the single flower on the side of the planter was waving them on.  Or so it seemed!

October Petunias Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Autumn Botanical Garden Fall

Oil on Canvas, 12" x 9"

Petunias were still in full bloom last week and I caught some cascading from their container.  I was instantly attracted to their shadows on the concrete walk and also on the brick wall of the library.  Sunlight highlighted some the petunia petals while the others remained shaded.  These all formed an interesting design to paint.  The container became a more "pumpkiny" color when I painted it because it just felt right. I loved popping in all of the shades of reds and pinks in this piece!

Ferny Grove Oil Landscape Painting Forest Woodland Nature Hiking Creek

Oil on stretched canvas, 20" x 16"

Light and shadow were even more important to me in this larger painting.  I laid in the shaded areas first to get the darks established and then allowed myself to work on the unshaded areas.  This helped the midtones be closer to the correct value and gave them some glow.  The grove was a pleasing combination of some favorite things - rock, water and greenery.  It seemed to be an intimate look into a secluded area of nature!

Rose and Mint Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Vase Spearmint Peppermint

Oil on Canvas, 10" x 8"

I paired a deep red rose with a few sprigs from a spearmint plant for this still life.  It seemed a little odd at first but I decided I liked the combination of the greens and reds with the white vase.  Something cheerful about it!

Billy Goat Oil Painting Art Pet Portraits Farm Animals

Goats are so strange looking but still cute in their own way.  This guy was very approachable and curious and, most importantly,  I loved his hairy chin!  I thought he deserved his own portrait.

Bluebonnets and Burro Oil Painting Donkey Art Pet Portraits Farm Animals

Oil on canvas, 9" x 12"

Burros were enjoying the same bluebonnet fields that the Texas longhorns were.  I loved the relaxed stance of this donkey and how the sunlight lit her shaggy coat.  The bright green fields with the floating flowers seemed to roll along for miles.  Very peaceful.

Double Red Gerberas Oil Painting Flowers Still Life Art Botanical Garden

Oil on hardboard, 5" x 7"

I wanted to make this little painting sing with color and light.  The red Gerberas may have started out to be the "stars", but the bowl actually seemed more interesting when I applied thick bands of color with a palette knife to its rim.  Gerberas are some of my favorite flowers to paint.  I wish I could keep them growing inside during the cold seasons.

Maple and Pine Oil Painting Landscape Palette knife Art Autumn Trees Forest

Oil on canvas, 10" x 8"

Working with a palette knife in this painting, I painted quickly to capture the exuberant feeling I felt for the scene.  I worked from a friend's photograph that was taken when we hiked a beautiful forest area of Arkansas. The filtered sunlight highlighted the colorful maple leaves that were outstreched against the rough bark of a pine tree.I really liked working with the thick paint and letting areas settle into others and leaving things alone when I felt it was time to quit.

Sage Oil Dog Pet Art Portraits Yellow Labrador Retriever

Oil on canvas panel, 10" x 12".

Sage is a good name for this Yellow Lab who is getting on in years and still bears a sweet and earnest expression.  What a smart and loyal dog for a loving family!  It was a rewarding commissioned piece for me to paint.
