Border Collie Stare

Portrait Watercolor Painting Dog Pet Art

Watercolor on Arches paper, 7 3/4" x 5 3/4".

Border Collies have a beautiful and intense stare when concentrating and I painted a portrait of this one in watercolor. The long hairs of the ears were especially fun to layer in with this medium.

Dutch Irises in Jar

Oil Painting Still Life Art Flowers Blue Ball Ideal Mason Jar Antique

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11" x 1 1/2".

Spring's Dutch Irises are a welcome sight in the garden. I painted a bouquet of them in an old Blue Ball Mason jar on some landscaping stones. I like their bold and carefree feeling.
The deep 1 1/2" sides are painted making the painting ready to hang without framing if desired.

Bananas in Silver Bowl

Oil Painting Still Life Art Fruit Food

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

These bananas seemed animated to me while I painted them in a silver bowl. I enjoyed the way the light bounced around in the shapes of the objects as well as the forground and background. Mixing the grays was fun also.

The 3/4" sides are painted making framing optional.

Jelly Roll

Oil Painting Still Life Art Pastries Sweets Food

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

It's fun to take creamy paint and make it create forms of something creamy, thick and sweet like this jelly-roll with cherry filling. It looks yummy . . . . . . well, only if you like this kind of food.

Little Buddy

Miniature Donkey Oil Painting Pet Art Farm Animals Horse

Oil on Canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

The miniature donkeys still have their thick winter coats at this time of year. Lots of currying is needed to make this little guy slick for summer. His mane and ears can be trimmed too, but I sometimes prefer the fuzzy look. The 3/4' sides are painted making it ready to hang without framing if desired.

Sebastian

Watercolor Cat Portrait Painting Pet Art Turkish Angora

Watercolor on Arches, 10" x 8".

Sebastian is a beautiful Turkish Angora cat and so he has a a distincitve (and distinguished) look. He obviously enjoys the outdoors as he is captured peering out from among the foliage and flowers on a sunny day near his home. These cats are very intelligent and agile, and Sebastian loves to play fetch with his toys. The portrait will be a surprise birthday gift for his loving mom.

This painting commissioned for $145.00. If you'd like a commissioned painting contact me. Thanks for stopping by! Please Visit my gallery to see all of my paintings.

Joyful Tulips

Watercolor Painting Spring Flowers Botanical Art

Watercolor on Arches, 11" x 6 3/4".

I didn't paint these watercolor tulips recently but I wanted to repost them for spring. I really like their "liveliness". I have some new red/orange tulips coming up now and starting to bloom so I look forward to painting them; probably in oil but maybe watercolor also. Their forms and colors are exciting to try to capture in paint.

Country Stream

Oil Painting Landscape Art Farm Stream Creek Fields Woods

Oil on canvas, 5" x 7".

I played with a palette of autumn colors in this small landscape study. I was very happy with the tonal relationships that resulted and will keep working on these studies as I keep up with painting commissions and learning portrait techniques in class and in my studio when I have time. And it's also finally time to work in the garden! Here's hoping for no more snow.

Bo

Oil Painting Dog Pet Art German Shepherd

Oil on canvas. 10" x 8".

This commissioned portrait of Bo, a German Shepherd in the UK, was special because of her greying face and her wise and loving gaze. That pretty much says it all.

Boris at Les Grands Champs

Oil Painting House Garden Art English Sheepdog France

Oil on canvas. 14" x 18".

Spring flowers are blooming profusely in the garden of this house in France where Boris, an Old English Sheepdog, resides. I had posted a photo of this painting as a work in progress recently and this is the finished piece. I enjoyed putting all of the shapes and colors of the landscape together with the features of the house and patio. But the most important element was the beautiful Sheepdog. He looked right at home in his surroundings.

After the Bath

Oil Painting Red-Winged Blackbird Art Portrait Wildlife Animals

Oil on Raymar panel, 8" x 6".

Red-winged Blackbirds visit my birdbaths every so often. I caught this male droopy-tailed and very wet after finishing his bath. I'm sure he'd rather be seen looking puffed-up and proud, but I thought he was charming and interesting this way. Birds are fascinating and there are endless possibilities in painting them.

Burnese Mountain Dog Pup

Oil Painting Pet Dog Art Portrait Mountain Dog

Oil on Raymar panel, 5" x 4".

This Burnese pup will grow up to be very large and very heavy! I love their tri-colored fur and their bulkiness too. Painting small works of cute dogs or other animals is a stress-reliever of sorts because they're so much fun for me to do.

Work in Progress

Oil Painting House Garden Art English Sheepdog France

Oil on canvas. 14" x 18".

This unfinished commissioned piece is of a beautiful home in France and an Old English Sheepdog included among the spring flowers. I actually remembered to pause and photograph it after I had it blocked in. Wow, I was lovin' the colors in this painting and the flow of it. I'll post the finished painting soon.

SOLD.

This commissioned painting of a sweet little Doxie was sold for $95. I've had some requests for Weinie dog images lately and this is one of my favorites. If you'd like a commissioned painting of your spoiled canine please contact me.

I finished a commissioned house with landscaping + family dog painting recently that I really enjoyed. It includes the spring flowers that I love! I hope to post the "work-in-progress" (WIP) before posting the final result. I remembered to photograph it after I had the painting blocked in and before adding more details.

Motherhood in Spring

Oil Painting Pet Rabbit Daffodils Art Portrait Easter Bunny Flowers Wildlife

Oil on canvas, 8" x 6".

Rabbits are very soft! That's what I kept thinking as I was painting this. I came very close to adopting one because they are almost irresistable. I painted this mother and one of her young nesting among some tall grass and daffodils. Spring is arriving and the days are getting longer. . . . and the time change is coming soon. . . .

Morning Impressions

Oil Painting Cow Art Portrait Farm Animals

Oil on canvas, 6" x 8".

I've been working on a series of studies with this particular landscape scene and this is the first one that I am happy with. I wanted to keep the dramatic colors of a dawn somewhat muted in this pastoral setting. I may change the position of the cow for the next one and/or my palette colors. Hopefully this fun experimentation and exercise will bring about some great insight. I know I love pushing the colors together so far.

Rufous Hummingbird

Oil Painting Bird Art Portrait Wildlife Animals

Oil on canvas, 7" x 5".

I'm looking forward to the little hummers returning here this spring. This type, the Rufous, is more of a Pacific coast visitor so I haven't seen him in my gardens, but I think he is very handsome and wanted to paint his portrait. I have the Ruby-throated hummingbirds at my feeders and have painted them several times. It's cool to see them perching for a few seconds on a feeder with their wings folded. I've also seen them perching in trees while resting between fights at the flowers and feeders. Having them buzz loudly close to my head is a weird feeling and that happened when I had three feeders being heavily guarded by these little warriors at the same time.

I finished another commissioned house painting and this one included an Old English Sheepdog. I'm awaiting approval from the client and when (if) I post it I'm considering posting first a work-in-progress painting since I did remember to take a photo this time(!) before I went on to complete the painting.

On the homefront, we've had a nice break in the weather and Rick and I have been having fun turning over garden soil and planting spring crops like sweet red onions, turnips and radishes. I still have some spinach that I covered up over the winter and will still have to keep watch on when the temps are supposed to fall well below freezing at night. Oh, and bought some yellow/orange tulip bulbs already sprouting that I hope to paint.

Red Tulips

Oil on archival canvas panel, 8" x 6".

This is a high-energy and high-value painting of some tulips bursting open. These colors radiate hope and cheerfulness to me and hopefully to others who love tulips also. It's been a long, long winter and spring will soon be upon us!

Pink Lady on Side

Oil Red Apple Still Life Painting Fruit Kitchen Art

Oil on Raymar panel, 6" x 8".

I guess I'm enjoying seeing and enjoying rich, bright colors on everyday subjects lately like this apple. It's backlit and painted from a somewhat different angle - on its side with its bottom playing a prominent part in the scene.
