Magnolia Still Life Oil Painting Southern Flower Trees

"Magnolia Still Life"

Oil on stretched back-stapled canvas 12" x 9" x 3/4". Sides are painted

I snipped a Magnolia bloom with some leaves and brought it inside for a still life. It faded very quickly so I worked from photos. I had planned to keep the painting looser, but this is what resulted. I found myself working on the shadows and details. Maybe it's really because I'm a little too compulsive and can't stop myself from working on refining things. This painting seemed to have a flow so I will probably do more from my photos. Wow, the ease of adding another layer of color mixture to an oil painting is an exciting thing indeed!

Gentle Burro Oil Painting Donkey Horse Pet Animal Art

"Gentle Burro"

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

I love to pet these small burros with their fuzzy heads and ears! I applied a lot of paint in forming this serene image of a burro and I really like the result. The burro has a reflective and tender look at the same time and this view from above includes her stripe. Donkeys are some of my favorite animals to paint and I've used a similar burro image before in a smaller format. This painting is on a canvas that is stapled in the back and the sides are painting making it ready to hang unframed if desired.

Tank Jack Russell Terrier Oil Painting Pet Dog Art

"Tank"

Oil on stretched canvas, 12" x 9" x 3/4".

Tank is a rough coated Jack Russell and so has more hair to paint! He looks so docile and innocent in this painting, but he turns off the anwering machine and has opened a door to the outside during a wicked hailstorm. These are just a few of his accomplishments so his mom and dad never have a dull moment I would think. When he has the time, he likes to rest in this stretched out position.

Orange Gerbera Daisies Watercolor Painting Flowers Botanical Still Life

"Bright Daisies"

Watercolor on Arches paper, 8" x 6".

The complimentary orange and blue colors in this one brings some excitement to the eye, and I enjoyed the shapes of the Gerbera daisies from this vantage point. They are reaching up and out toward the sun and sky. I think they are glorious summer flowers. It's a break for the spirit to paint a colorful, free and easy, no fuss, no rules painting now and then.

Hobbes Jack Russell Terrier Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Animals

"Hobbes"

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10" x 3/4".

Hobbes is loved by the family of the last Jack Russell that I posted. Imagine living with two Jack Russells! Painting Hobbes was a little more challenging when I was dealing with the intermingling of the different hair colors along with his white hair strands. This coloring and pattern helps give him his distinctive look.

Garden Wall Oil Plein Air Painting Landscape

"Garden Wall"

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 10" x 3/4".

This was a painting of the flower gardens at the Reynolds Cancer Support House in Fort Smith that I did with our plein air group. The terraced rock walls were pleasing with trees above casting shadows on the walking path, shrubs and flowers. I did work a little more on it back in the studio and then I was really pleased with it. It conveys the feeling of light and shadows that impressed me.
The 3/4" sides are painted making framing optional.

Beau Himalayan Cat Oil Painting Pet Art Portrait

"Beau"

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

This painting of Beau was interesting because it portrays him back-lit by the sun. The colors of his face and hair reflect the light and shadows on him and the colors surrounding him. If you'd like to commission a painting please contact me.

Walking Path Plein Air Landscape Oil Painting Carol Ann Cross Park

"Walking Path"

Oil on canvas board, 6" x 8.

This landscape was one of two that I painted one day last week with a plein air group as I am getting back to doing these outdoor painting adventures again. Of course, the rules include painting quickly and fearlessly. Our leader, artist Patricia Lappin, expects us to measure up, so we try out best. I did work on this painting just a little more at home and made the sky and water less busy.

I hope everyone had a great Memorial Day weekend!

Fawn Pug Pencil Drawing Graphite Pet Art Portrait

"To the Point"

Pencil on archival paper, 14" x 11".

I drew this pencil portrait of a pug prior to painting her in watercolor. The wide stripe down her back gets narrow as it goes down her tail and almost disappears. Then it reappears in full view at the tip of her tail.

I had a great workout painting with a plein aire group yesterday and I'm planning to post at least one painting next week from my attempts and some photos of us hard at work.

Have a great holiday weekend!

Cat inTube Oil Painting Animal Pet Portrait Art

"Stuffy"

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

Stuffy was found as a stray and had many physical abnormalities which included very short legs and an enormous tongue that hung out all of the time. The kids' tube was a favorite place for her. Stuffy was described by her owners as adorable. She lived to be about 20 years old and was loved very much, of course!

Silky Terrier Oil Painting Commissioned Pet Art Portrait

"Tobey"

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11" x 3/4".

This is a commissioned painting of Tobey, a beautiful silver/fawn-haired Silky Terrier, from Australia. He had those lovely bright eyes with bangs framing his face like the typical Silky. Silky Terriers originated from Australia as a cross between the Yorky Terrier and the Australian Terrier. Their ears are clipped inside and out to keep this look (their ears are so soft). I had one of these little sprites years ago - in case you didn't already assume that! Tobey's mom said he was camera-shy. Mine was a show-off. I wish I had taken more (and better) photos of her though.

White Peony Oil Painting Flowers Botanical Art

"Mother's Peonies"

Oil on stretched canvas, 8" x 6" x 3/4".

Our Daily Painters' theme for May is Mothers and I painted my white peonies as a celebration of Mother's Day because my mother loved them as much as I do. I took several photos of them in full and partial bloom right before the heavy rains came (again) and lowered their heads. I think the buds are gorgeous with their crimson red and light green shades tightly holding in the white and pink pink-tinged petals.
The 3/4" sides are painted making framing optional.

Black Pug Oil Painting Dog Pet Art Portrait

"Pug Chin-Up"

Oil on board, 11" x 14".
This painting was included in the annual competition, Art Show at the Dog Show, in Wichita, Kansas this year. Maddie's expressive face is sometimes fascinating and always honest. She was using my old piano bench as a chin rest to bathe in the sunlight. I adopted Maddie as a frightened three-year-old rescue Pug. She is now my smart and loving darling. Raffia Tied Peppers Oil Painting Still Life Food Art

"Raffia-Tied Peppers"

Oil on stretched canvas, 7" x 5" x 3/4".

Hot red peppers tied together with raffia makes me think of great spicy foods and hot climates. I hang them around my house after a summer of growing these little red peppers that are dangerous to eat!
The 3/4" sides are painted the same color as the background making framing optional.

Papillon Watercolor Painting Dog Pet Art Portrait

"Only Pap"

Watercolor on paper, 11.25" x 10.25".

This is one of my older paintings of my Papillon, Nina. I've been busy with commissions and also taking an abstract painting class with Patricia Lappin here in Fort Smith. She is a motivating instructor and also a wonderful artist. If I paint something in her class that I think might actually be worthy of posting I will do it . . . . . . . well, maybe.

Daffodil Clusters Oil Painting Botanical Still Life Floral

"Daffodil Clusters"

Oil on stretched canvas, 10" x 8" x 3/4".

Miniature daffodils seem much more delicate than the larger daffodil varieties. I love their cheerful faces - crinkled, fluffy petals and bright yellow centers.
The 3/4" sides are painted a dark brown making framing optional.

Norwegian White Cat Oil Painting Animal Pet Art Portrait

"White Cat"

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11" .

This was a commissioned piece of a lovely white cat that is believed to be a Norwegian Forest cat. These cats have a very long history. Her profile was lit by a nearby window making long cast shadows. It was challenging and fun to paint her form with the gray/neutral background.
