Chihuahua Dog Oil Painting Pet Art Portrait

"Chihuahua"

Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 8" x 8" x 3/4".

When I saw this lovely and intelligent Chihuahua during the summer I knew I wanted to paint him. I photographed him several times and this was the pose I chose to paint. Actually, the other photos I took weren't very good because he didn't stay still for more than a second!

School Girl Portrait Oil Painting Figure Young Classic

"School Girl"

Oil on canvas, 12" x 9".

For me this was a successful piece in that it was finally one other portrait that I was pleased enough with to post on my blog. I painted it from an old photo that I had taken of my daughter who was in 5th or 6th grade and wearing one of the sweet outfits that my mother had sewn for her. I remember having her pose many times for me in those days when I was in art school studying painting and photography. I'm now going back to some of those "old" photos to use in the portrait painting class that I'm taking from Patricia Lappin. She has encouraged me to paint more boldly and confidently and she's a wonderful portrait artist from which to study. Art is truly a journey just like life. I don't think I really understood it while it was happening . . . . . .

Cherry Tumble Oil Painting Still Life Art Fruit Natural Food Ranier Kitchen Garden

"Cherry Tumble"

Oil on back-stapled canvas, 10" x 8".

Ranier cherries are described as large, sweet, yellow cherries with a bright red blush. I chose to paint the type of cherries that I like to look at and also eat regardless of their cost. So I only got a few! My better half would gladly accept the very tart ones. I love the transition of deep yellow to orange to red. It really is the best. Oh yeah, just like the Jacob's Coat roses that I adore painting. Hmmm........

Red Grapes Oil Painting Traditional Fruit Still Life Kitchen Food Vineyard

"Red Grapes"

Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 8" x 8".

While I was still in the spirit to paint fruit, I painted this traditional still life of a large bunch of red grapes. The group has its own form and some individual ones are different from the bunch. That was the fun involved in studying the grapes as well as the wonderful reds that were illuminated.

Jacob's Coat Study Mini Oil Painting Rose Flower Garden

"Jacob's Coat Study"

Oil on gessoed arches paper, 3.5" x 2.5".

I painted this little "mini" as I was in the process of working on my larger Jacob's Coat climbing rose that I posted earlier. These little paintings have their own energy and I enjoy exploring important information like shapes and values in this smaller format. In the past, I painted many of these art cards (ACEO's) that are the size of trading cards.

Dreaming of Summer Oil Painting Sunflower Floral Still Life

"Dreaming of Summer"

Oil on Belgian Linen board, 10" x 8".

A twisty-petaled sunflower with an interesting green center is the center of interest in a painting that I did last winter as I was looking through my summer flower photos. I think it is kind of a unique suflower head and really attactive. But then. that's my opinion.

Lemon Wrap Oil Painting Still Life Fruit Kitchen Citrus Food Cooking

"Lemon Wrap"

Oil on gallery-wrapped canvas, 8" x 8" x 3/4"

Tissue paper wrapped around fruit seems to make the fruit more inviting and interesting. I had a lemon with some green tones and I nestled it several ways in thin tissue and this is one result. I buy a lot of lemons and use them as many ways as I can. I guess it's probably really about their smell.

Prissy Oil Painting Commission Animal Art Portrait Yorkie Terrier Dog

"Prissy"

Oil on stretched canvas, 14" x 11" x 3/4".

This portrait of a Yorkie was a commissioned piece. Her ears didn't make it all of the way up sometimes and this added to her uniqueness. Her name, Prissy, wasn't really a good adjective to describe her, and her best friend was a black Lab named Hoss.

Cold Water Ducks Oil Painting Wildlife Birds Fowl

"Cold Water Ducks"

6" x 8" Oil on archival canvas panel.

This painting was inspired by watching a group of ducks early in the spring on a sunny but cold, windy day at a local pond. The shapes of the ducks and their shadows on the water were interesting along with the movement of the water. Thanks for looking!
